Joseph Davis Obituary

Joseph John Davis 1929 - 2010 SILVERTON, Ore. - Joseph John Davis passed on peacefully in his home on Tuesday, November 16, 2010, surrounded by his family. Born in New York in 1929, Joe grew up in the bustling borough of Queens. His admiration for conversation and debate brought him to study Journalism at the University of Washington, after enlisting in the service and being stationed in Alaska and Washington during the Korean War. He met his first wife, Joan while studying at the University, and the two married in 1952. Together they had three children and moved to Silverton in 1960. Joe became editor and later owner of the Silverton Appeal Tribune, where he lived out a vast collection of journalistic endeavors. He also served in the Peace Corps with his second wife, Doris. Over the years he became an esteemed member of the Silverton community while participating in politics, volunteering at local schools and being a successful entrepreneur. Joe achieved Silverton's Life Time Achievement and Citizen of the Year awards. As a loving and lively individual, Joe had many passions in life including his family and friends. Joe enjoyed tennis, golf, racket ball and sailing, and was always up for a game of gin with his family and friends. He touched countless people over his lifetime and will be missed. Joe was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan and second wife, Doris. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; three children, Cathy Wilson, Paul Davis and Susie Gex; six grandchildren and other extended family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at First Christian Church, 402 N. 1st St. in Silverton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to SACA in Silverton. Hello family. My name is Kathy and I have worked at The Home Place for many years. During that time I had the pleasure of waiting on Joe and the other members of "the board meeting" on Wdenesday nights. What a gentleman he was. I knew Joan briefly also. What a loss for Silverton. Hope you are all doing well.

I have fond memories of Joe from the days when I was the Capital Life editor of the Salem Capital Journal, and Joe was editor of the Silverton Appeal Tribune. He was a fine newspaperman, fiercely competitive, yet always friendly. I hadn’t seen Joe for many years, as our paths ceased crossing when we both left the newspaper business. Even so, it was with great sadness that I read of his passing, and I extend my condolences to his family.
