Kirk Best Obituary

Kirk Arthur Best

November 11, 1946 - February 14, 2017

Salem - Kirk Arthur Best passed away on February 14, 2017 surrounded by those who loved him. He is survived by his two sons, Christopher Best and Jonathan Best, and three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Eden and Julian. Though his accomplishments were many, his proudest successes were those who survived him.

There aren't many in this world as capable as Kirk of grace, knowledge, and love. The world has lost a life-long scholar and mentor in the passing of Kirk. He had adoring friends around the country and world--from Oregon to New York, China to Azerbaijan, and Ireland to Mongolia.

Kirk was born on Veterans Day in 1946 in upstate New York. He noted that he started earning a living at 7 years-old when he was sent to live and work on a dairy farm. It was no wonder how his remarkable hard-working, entrepreneurial spirit developed.

Following graduation from high school, Kirk delayed further education to pursue a painting business. In 1967, he was called to serve his country during the Vietnam War for the United States Army. He was sent to basic training and was initially selected to serve in the infantry. Moments before getting on the plane to join his fellow soldiers in Vietnam, Kirk was instructed to bunk on base and await further orders. Kirk did not disclose much about what he did during the War, other than his new orders sent him to the Pentagon.

Upon discharge, Kirk's inherent thirst for knowledge led him to the study of economics at Syracuse and Oxford. Upon receiving his degree, he took employ as an economist with the National Automobile Dealers Association, which allowed him to travel throughout the United States. He fell in love with the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and made Salem, Oregon his permanent home.

There he met Clare Boals, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Boals, and fathered his two sons. Tending to the needs and desires of his two boys became Kirk's most adhered aspiration, and he accomplished his goal superbly.

Kirk was a wealth of knowledge, a patient teacher, and could converse with anyone about anything. While he will be terribly missed, he left a lasting legacy in those he touched.

A Memorial Service is planned for 11:00 am, Saturday February 25th at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

I worked with Kirk at the George S. May Consulting Company. Kirk was the Oregon manager of special representatives. We would drive to businesses and speak with them about how they might improve their venture. Daniel Sirstand was the assistant manager. The three of us helped many entrepreneurs, their employees and customers. It lead to me getting a Masters Degree in management and helping many more firms. I enjoyed knowing Kirk. It's true, he could speak on any topic. He had an expansive knowledge and imagination. Kirk and I were good friends.

Just heard today of Kirk's passing. We used to work together and kept in touch sporadically since then. We drove many miles together and spoke several times a day while working together. One subject he never tired of was keeping me informed of his boys progress in life and their endeavors. Kirk was a fountain of knowledge. I am thankful to have known him.
