Gretchen and Anna,
I am so shocked and saddened by the news of Mark's death. I worked with Mark at the Free Clinic as a volunteer physician. He represented all the best qualities of one involved in health care of the marginalized of society. His respect and care for all people was always evident, whether they were kind and appreciative or not. His medical knowledge was vast but understated. He knew how to make a way where there was no way--get a referral, get a CT- he made it happen somehow.
He was a Renaissance man, knowledgable about so many things. I loved picking his brain about the history of the South. He was an attentive listener who made you think your observations were very fascinating. I have followed Anna's progress through school as we have a son her age who also moved to Oregon after college. We shared stories of launching our kids and the emotions that comes with that.
I am so thankful to have had the privilege of knowing Mark and working with him. It was an honor.
I am praying for you both as you grieve this tremendous loss.

For a great soul, I knew. God speed.
When Great Trees Fall, (Maya Angelou)
When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

I only got to meet Mark once, just a short month ago, when he and Gretchen came to hear me sing at the Greenville First Baptist Church with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. However, over just lunch that day and seeing that night his big, smiling face in the audience, he left an impression of kindness and friendship that will last for me a lifetime. I am particularly glad he, Gretchen, Maury, and Lee came backstage for the Chorus to sing Irish Blessing to them. May that be just one of many happy memories that help his family find some comfort.

I first met Mark, Director of Nursing at the Greenville Free Medical Clinic in SC. about 10 years ago. In subsequent years, I became a nurse manager of 2 of Greenville's satellite clinics. Mark proved to be one of the most avid advocates for care of the underserved that I have ever met. He inspired all those working at the clinic to perform at their highest level and served as a most capable mentor when required. I admired his dedication and his willingness to always go "above and beyond" the needs of his patients and his collegues. Rest assured that we will continue to uphold his legacy of providing a high level of care to our patients. Rest well, Mark. Bless Gretchen and Anna and all the family in this time of sorrow.
