Patrick Tabor Obituary

Patrick Arthur Tabor

August 5, 1936 - March 6, 2017

Stayton - Patrick was born to Edna Blake Tabor and Arthur E. Tabor in Los Angeles, CA on August 5, 1936. He died March 6, 2017 in Salem at the age of 80. Following the death of his father, he was raised by his mother, Edna and his aunt Margaret in Portland. He graduated from St. Patrick's elementary school, Central Catholic High School, Multnomah Junior College, and Portland State College from which he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in History and Physical Education. As a young man, Patrick enjoyed all sports and that led to teaching various sports fitness programs for the Portland Parks and Recreation Department. It also led to coaching football, basketball, and baseball at the high school and junior college level. Patrick discovered his interest in history at age 10. He earned a Master's Degree in History from Southern Oregon College. He taught in a number of Catholic high schools and enjoyed a 30-year career teaching history at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. October 17 was a significant date in his life. On that date in 1954 he joined the United States Naval Reserve and served 8 years as a yeoman. On October 17, 1959, he married Carol Helene O'Brien in Portland. They shared their love for each other and their Catholic faith, resulting in 57 years of marriage. They enjoyed many common activities but encouraged each other to pursue their individual interests. Their marriage was blessed with 7 children: Michael, Patrick, Richard, Ann, James, Stephen, and Edward. He loved his children's spouses and delighted in his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Vigil service will be held on Thursday, March 9 at 5:30 pm and Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, March 10 at 11:30 am both at Immaculate Conception Church in Stayton. Interment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Stayton. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.

Pat was a great colleague as a history professor for 30 years at Chemeketa Community College, and he became a great friend as a result of our work together. I will miss him deeply - friends like Pat do not come along everyday.

Pat was a great teacher that seemed to love what he did. He was one of those that could take something that would be boring and turn it into something interesting. His lectures were great and I remember them well, thanks Pat!

To his family, I am deeply sorry to hear of your loss and send my deepest condolences.
