Paul Sachs Obituary
Paul Sachs
August 15, 1919 - November 18, 2016
Silverton - Paul Aaron Sachs died on November 18, 2016, at home in Silverton surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born in Annapolis, Maryland to Ida and Michael Sachs, and grew up one of five children during the Depression. He attended St. Johns College on a Congressional Scholarship, excelling at athletics. Following his graduation in 1941 he worked for the aviation company Glenn L. Martin. On September 4, 1943, Paul married Shirley Lee Kolodner, who was his wife of 73 years, and survives him.
Paul served in the Army in World War II, mainly on Saipan, where he managed a medical laboratory and became a medical artist. His drawings were published in medical texts for years.
When the War ended Paul returned to Baltimore, where he and Shirley raised two children, Rick and Kate. Paul managed various businesses until his retirement in 1985, when he was able to pursue his passion for the Arts. He was a favored student of the renowned sculptor and painter Frieda Sohn, and became an exceptional sculptor, creating permanent works in wood, stone, and metal, and more ephemeral ones in butter. His work adorns the homes of his children, grandchildren, and family friends from coast to coast.
In 2012, Paul and Shirley moved to Oregon to live with their daughter Kate and son-in-law Jossi Davidson.
Paul had an amazingly quick, dry wit and kept everyone laughing until the very end of his 97 years. He could beat anyone at Rummikub and was always a formidable bridge player.
Paul was a true Renaissance Man who could make or fix anything. He made furniture from wood and tables from metal. He built a cabin cruiser boat in his back yard, in which he and his family explored the Chesapeake Bay for years. There was nothing he couldn't do, and do artistically.
Throughout his life Paul was a devout Orioles fan. He was also an avid reader. He embraced fully Solzhenitsyn's concept of completing any project or work of art to "the final inch"—as close to perfection as possible.
Most of all, Paul was kind and sweet. All his grandchildren loved him and his great-grandchildren adored him. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Paul is survived by his cherished wife, Shirley Lee Sachs, his sisters Annie Frieman and Bea Dryer, his son Rick (Barbara) Sachs, daughter Kate (Jossi) Davidson and by grandchildren Kim (John) Greeley, Ryan (Lindsey) Sachs, Brigit Muldoon, Noah (Tonya) Davidson, Autumn (Jonathan) Wrobel, and Kyung Eun Davidson, and by his great-grandchildren, Liza and Sydney Greeley, Allie and Carter Sachs, Izabella Davidson, and Sadie Wrobel.
