Sam T. Likens

CORVALLIS - Sam T. Likens retired research chemist, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and Courtesy Professor, Agricultural Chemistry Department, Oregon State University, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday morning, Nov. 3, 2006, 10 days short of his 83rd birthday. Sam had some health problems during the latter part of his life, but the immediate cause of death was from complications from pneumonia. His wife Peggy preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1989.Sam served as USDA Research Chemist, specializing in hops and brewing research. He retired in 1982. His major contribution was developing the Hop Storage Index which is now widely used to evaluate hop quality and brewing value. Sam was a member of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, being awarded an Honorary Lifetime membership for his many contributions.Sam enjoyed camping in the Cascades, spending several weeks each July at his favorite campsite near Elk Lake. He and Peggy always pitched an extra tent and they invited their friends to spend some memorable days there as guests.At his request, no services are planned. His inurnment, under the direction of Virgil T Golden Funeral Directors will take place at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at Eureka Cemetery, Newport.Contributions in Sam’s name may be made to a favorite charity of your choice in care of Mary Kate Harkins, 3815 Glenwood Lp, Salem OR 97301
