Margie Loray Johnson Brooks

Margie Loray Johnson Brooks, 82, of Statesville, was welcomed into her heavenly home by her savior Jesus Christ Friday, Oct. 15, 2021. She was met there by her loving husband and soulmate, Dwight Eugene "Gene" Brooks who preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Flossie Johnson; and five sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Jane VanHoy (Bryan), David Brooks, Debbie Morgan (Phil); four grandchildren, Jason (Megan), Megan, Molly, Paul (Charity); two great-grandchildren, Ty and Cody; and several nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in North Wilkesboro, she and Gene moved to their dream home in Statesville in 1966. They raised their own family in a neighborhood they loved and served humbly. Margie was a homemaker until her youngest child started school, then went to work at Hunter Brothers and later Jantzen Sportswear, the company from which she retired. She and Gene were members at Command Baptist Church. Margie was a talented cook and prepared countless meals for her family, extended family, friends, and neighbors. She was an expert at making ordinary things beautiful. She skillfully decorated cakes and created floral arrangements. She also enjoyed restoring and painting old furniture and sewing too. Several of her friends would come to her to have their hair "set." Margie had a big heart and would welcome those who needed a bed for a night or a month until they got back on their feet. Gene and Margie always kept a huge vegetable garden and cheerfully shared what they grew with their neighbors. Margie continued growing a garden for many years after Gene passed. Her grandchildren loved spending the night with her, and she was very adept at spoiling them. Her family was the joy and focus of her life and they will dearly miss her.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 17, at Hunting Creek Cemetery where she will be laid to rest beside Gene. The Rev. Tony Fox will officiate. No formal visitation.

Jayne, David, Debbie I am so sorry to hear of Margie's passing. She was such a sweet and soft spoken lady who loved her family dearly. It was a privilege to be her hairdresser for many years. During her appointments she spoke lovingly of her grandchildren whom she was so proud of and she even shared some of her cooking tips and recipes with me. I know she will be missed and my thoughts and prayers will be with all of you during this difficult time. May the Lord bless you with comfort, love and peace.
