Alvin attended Rutgers University in New Jersey. He worked for Bamberger & Company in Newark, N.J., and then for the United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, AFL-CIO, Local 21, Newark, N.J., as secretary-treasurer and business agent. He was elected president of the New Jersey Labor Press Council in 1970-1971. Raising his family at Indian Lake in Denville, N.J., would always hold a warm spot in his heart. After retiring in 1978, Alvin and Dorothy spent many happy years in St. Augustine, their home there a frequent destination for friends and family. Alvin's wit and wonderful sense of humor will always be fondly remembered.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son and his wife, Robert and Carol James of Mooseheart, his daughter, Noreen Applebaum of Sparta, N.J., his son and his wife, Mark and Patty James of Fairbanks, Alaska; and grandchildren, Aaron and Lauren Applebaum, Nicole Applebaum and Sarah James. He is preceded in death by his son-in-law, James Applebaum.
We would like to thank all of the friends and staff at Wyndham Lakes at Orange Park, Fla., as well as our friends and neighbors in Alaska for all of their help and support. A special thanks goes to our family friend, Dr. Dave Grauman. A private memorial service will be held in early January in Alaska. Those wishing to contact the family should write to: The James Family, P.O. Box 82113, Fairbanks, AK 99708.
