Charles McGovern Obituary

Charles Francis McGovern, 86, of St. Augustine, passed away Jan. 10, 2014, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. He was the eldest son of Patrick and Julia McGovern (deceased) and was born and grew up in the Bronx, N.Y., and served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he married Margaret McMorrow and became a member of the New York City Police Department. In 1950 they moved to Bethpage, N.Y., where they raised their children. Charlie was active in the Knights of Columbus; he coached and managed the children's many activities. He was always there for his children. After retiring from the N.Y.P.D. in 1974, he and Peggy soon relocated to St. Augustine. He worked as a ranger at the Ponce de Leon Country Club and St. Augustine Shores Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf and meeting many other golfers. He and Peggy have lived in St. Augustine for 30 years and loved every minute. They are longtime members of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas (Renee); brothers, Philip and James; and his beloved schnauzer, Mutzie. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Margaret "Peggy" McGovern; children, John C. (Margaret), Kevin J. (Ellen), Margaret Herrick (Thomas), Philip T. (Debbie) and Glenn P. (Hope); 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
