David K. Craig of Coquina Crossing in Elkton, Fla., was born on Sept. 20, 1928, in Schenectady, N.Y., and passed away on Oct. 2, 2010, at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in St. Augustine, Fla., where he had been a resident since 2006 and had been under the care of Community Hospice of NE Florida since 2008. He resided in Schenectady until moving to St. Augustine in 1988.
He worked for McCormack (Mayflower) Highway Trans for several years before going to work as the chauffeur for the Schenectady General Electric Co., retiring after 25 years of service there.
Although his job always involved driving, to relax on his days off he always liked to take motor trips. He and his wife enjoyed camping for more than 35 years. During their many years of traveling, they covered all the lower 48 states. A lot of that time was searching out and visiting nearly 100 lighthouses. For their 50th anniversary in August 2001, they spent two nights in the Selkirk Lighthouse on Lake Ontario in western New York. For more than 40 years he enjoyed attending stock car races with his wife, going to many of the tracks from Maine to Florida. Due to his first love of the outdoors, he spent a couple of days a week for the first few years after coming to St. Augustine helping to keep the athletic fields mowed and in top shape, working for his son at Nease High School in St. Augustine. For eight years he and his wife spent the better part of every summer in the Country Woods RV resort in Franklin, N.C.
David is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Gasner) Craig; two sons, Richard McNitt (Sally) of Niskayuna, N.Y., and Barry Craig (Lisa) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; a sister, Jacquelin Willoughby of Scotia, N.Y.; two brothers, John Craig of Ocala, Fla., and Peter Craig of Schenectady, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kristen McNitt Turcotte, Denise McNitt Grab, Kylie Craig and Kevin Craig; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Alyssa Turcotte; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Trinity Episcopal Parish on St. George Street in St. Augustine. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in his name may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or to the Jacksonville Humane Society Animal Shelter, 8464 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32216.

Aunty Shirley, Barry, Lisa, Rick and Sally my thoughts are with you. I wish I could be there during this time. Even though I only saw Uncle Dave a few times in the last several years, I will always remember him as a big, strong man with a big heart...that loved animals. Kathy
