Elsie Theresa Manucy Obituary

After a short struggle with cancer, Elsie Theresa Manucy, 91, peacefully passed away at her home on May 25, 2014. She was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Loretta, Fla., to Geneva and Curtis Hartley. After marrying James Lee Manucy, they lived in Texas during World War II, and returned to St. Augustine afterward.

Elsie was well known in the St. Augustine community because of her Minorcan ties and the various jobs she had, including Gus's 8 to 9er, McCartney's Drug Store, Jake's Bait and Tackle, and retired from the culinary department at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. After retirement, she learned to drive and obtained a CNA (certified nursing assistant) license to care for others. During her "free time," she loved to travel! Elsie enjoyed camping and gambling, especially the Las Vegas penny/nickel slots. Maturity did not slow Elsie down. In her late 70s, she could hike 3 miles in Colorado. When her sight began to fail, Elsie adapted her lifestyle to listening to "talking books" and playing word games on her iPad.

The past few years, Elsie spent the spring and fall in Blairsville, Ga., with her daughter enjoying the seasonal changes.

She is survived by her son, Curtis Lee (Carole) Manucy, St. Augustine; daughter, Cheryl Manucy (Ray) Fair, Blairsville, Ga.; niece, Brenda Hartley (Ray) Ashton, St. Augustine; sister, Eunice Culpepper, Madison, Fla.; grandchildren, Todd Manucy (fianceé, Brenda Beeson), Kevin (Tracy) Manucy; and Cheron Haggard (Kurt) Sanders, all of St. Augustine; great-grandchildren, Hunter Manucy, Colby Manucy, Madison Manucy, Ila Paolini and Kaitlyn Manucy.

Special thanks to Dr. Cort Taliaferro, Dr. Deirdre Leake and their staffs, Flagler Hospital, and of course Community Hospice, for their support and compassion.

Nana's unbounding energy, her loyalty and enjoyment of family and friends, her smile, and her positive attitude will be missed but will continue to inspire us and warm our hearts when we think of her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be send to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 525 State Road 16, Suite 112, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Family and friends will gather for a "Celebration of Elsie's Life" at a later date.

Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of the arrangements. craigfuneralhome.com.
