Robert Ping Obituary
Robert M. Ping passed away early on March 10, 2010, at the age of 75 at Flagler Hospital. Born in Jersey City, N.J., Mr. Ping first met Ann, his beloved wife of 55 years, after throwing a snowball at her when she was 10 and he was 12 years old. The Pings raised their family in Spring Lake, N.J.
In addition to Ann, Mr. Ping is survived by nine children, daughters, Marianne Rosa, Margaret Ping, Mimi Topping, Michelle Ping; and sons, Michael, Martin, Matthew, Mark, and Mitchell Ping; 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Martin, OP, Ronnie Ping, Carol Ping; and brothers, John Ping and Thomas Ping.
Mr. Ping worked for over 40 years in management for AT&T. After retiring from the company, he was a professor and chair of the business department at Caldwell College, and retired to St. Augustine in 1996. Mr. Ping served in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 14-7 for many years. There will be no services at the request of the deceased.

I had a quick, spur of the moment business trip to DC this past week and had to drive because I was transporting several computers for a project - I also had to pick up Patrick Jr. and friends for college spring break on my return. I needed a big vehicle, one with a lot of space and seating. A truck perhaps from Ryder, Penske, Avis, Budget. I called them all but nothing seemed to fit my needs. In the end it was a Chevy Suburban from Enterprise that I chose. You see where I’m going with this. I’d never driven a Suburban – it’s massive, fit for a family of nine with dogs, big rowdy Labs. During my drive to DC, alone in the Suburban, many thoughts about the Pings went through my mind. I recalled Mrs. Ping nightly getting in her Suburban on Newark Avenue to go pick up Mr. Ping at the Spring Lake train station. You could literally set your watch by her routine. I recalled the rides home from Sound End pavilion along Ocean Ave in the Suburban; boisterous kids piling in rows of seats, beach gear in tow, sand and salt water everywhere, Mrs. Ping at the wheel. It occurred to me then, in the mid-70’s, as it did repeatedly while driving to DC, how tailor-made this huge vehicle is to a large family like the Pings. Despite gas costs and its paltry 11 MPG, its size hasn’t been compromised at all over the years. I also thought, what a shame if GM had been allowed to go under and the Suburban were never to be made again. Anyway, after completing my assignment in DC, then returning with a car load of college kids and dirty clothes – fighting rain, traffic and fatigue all the way – my thoughts switched away from the Pings. But then my wife mentioned to me this morning that she heard Mr. Ping had passed away. I went directly to the Obits in the APP. It was true. A saintly patriarch, Mr. Ping, had passed. It occurred to me at that moment that maybe something other than purely logistics led me to chose a Suburban this week.

Dad, you were a kind and gentle giant who had a heart of gold. You certainly had a wonderful life as you touched the hearts and minds of so many over the past three quarters of a century. I love you and miss you tremendously.
