Thomas Honl Obituary

Honl, Thomas J.

Thomas J. Honl, age 65, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at his home is Stevens Point. Tom was the youngest of six children born in Oakes, North Dakota, to Irene (Baker) and Bernard Honl. The family made their way to Wautoma, Wisconsin, to start a new life on beautiful Silver Lake to run Silvercryst Resort. When he was merely three years old Tom lost his father and was raised with the love and attention of his mother, brothers, and sisters. The lake community became his second family and he was blessed with strong mentors in his life, most especially a father figure in Jack Mares and Dr. Tom Poulette, who introduced him and encouraged him to explore the world of dentistry.

Tom thrived in educational environments, graduating from Marquette University School of Dentistry in 1975. Tom then established a general dental practice in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, that same year and practiced for more than 35 years. Tom was a lifelong learner. He went on to achieve his Masters in General Dentistry as well as his Fellowship with the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and ultimately became a Diplomate with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Tom continued to challenge himself in his career, developing new skills, and expanding services for his patients. These included cosmetic dentistry, laser surgery, sedation dentistry, and oral appliance therapy for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, as well as orofacial pain treatment for patients with headaches and head & neck pain.

Tom married Jaqulynn Honl (Nellessen) on June 22, 2012. In 2013, with the support and encouragement of his wife, Tom set out to realize his dream and established Central Wisconsin's first Dental Sleep Center; Advanced TMD and Dental Sleep Center in Plover, Wisconsin. His practice focused exclusively on helping people who suffered with obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, TMJ problems, headaches, and head & neck pain.

Tom is survived by a loving family including his wife Jaqulynn; his children from a previous marriage, Ellie Honl Herman (Michael Herman) and Daniel Honl (Shannon Thomas Honl); stepchildren Hannah, Maxwell, and Benjamin Lundgren; and his siblings Jerry Honl (Sandie Neuenschwander), Donna Tompkins, Mary Peterson, Raymond Honl (Nancy Woodworth), and Joan Honl.

He was preceded in death by his father Bernard Honl and mother Irene Baker Honl Olesen, stepfather Evon Olesen, brothers-in-law David Tompkins, Duane Peterson, and Jack Curtis.

Beyond Tom's profession, his love of reading, Packer games, and playing Scrabble may have kept him indoors; however, his love of the outdoors was evident throughout his life. He was a masterful gardener, swimmer, fisherman, scuba diver, and camping enthusiast. His greatest memories were his many travels to Canada fly-in fishing expeditions with his sons and friends, and his travels to the Czech Republic with Charles Gust, daughter Ellie, and cousin Mary Anthony to research the history of the Honl family.

Dr. Thomas Honl will be greatly missed for his service to his patients, his community, and his professional organizations. But more so by the family and friends who knew him well, whose lives he impacted, and whose hearts he touched forever.

A private service was held on Tuesday October 18, 2016, at the Pisarski Community Funeral Home in Plover. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Thomas J. Honl Memorial Fund. Mail donations to Pisarski Funeral Home P.O. Box 193 Plover, WI 54467.

Dr. Honl had studied and knew what was the right thing to do for a patient. That confidence came through in his manner and work. I could relax and trust him.

I had no dental worries under his care.

I am sorry he is gone. He died too young.

So sorry to hear about Dr.Honl. I had Dr. Honl as my dentist in my early years and he did a lot of work on my teeth. He was a perfectionist and it really showed as I got older and the work that he did is still perfect. He waited to be paid as I did not have dental insur.
He had a great personality and very easy to relax once there. (I had such a fear)
Every one that I referred to him as patients were very happy with him.
God Bless him and his family.

I met Dr. Honl my senior year in high school. I did not have dental care available to me as a child and it was now time to seek some serious help. I don't remember how I found Dr. Honl, but he was practicing downtown Stevens Point I believe with Dr. Hom and Dr. Hawley at the time. I was embarrassed to open my mouth for him and his staff, but they made me feel so comfortable and accepted. The compassion and care was impeccable. That was 38 years ago and the original miracles he worked in my mouth are still with me today. About 5 years later, I was in a car accident and my car was totaled. I could not afford a new vehicle and couldn't get a loan without a credit record. Dr. Honl was the only person I ever owed a significant amount of money to, so I asked him if he could write me a letter of reference. He wrote that letter to my credit union and I was granted the loan. When I heard the news last week I was deeply saddened and at a real loss. Here was a man who gave so much to others his entire life, and when he needed
help I (we) were unable to help him. My most
sincere sympathy goes out to his entire family,
Roberta, Ellie, Daniel, Jackie and children and
anyone who knew him. May we cherish the
good memories and find comfort that he is no longer suffering and feeling pain.

I feel as if something in his world was not right and now he left a mark in my world that something is not right. I trusted him with one of my gifts, my teeth. He made my chewing ability possible after my dental surgery when my jaw was broken and miss aligned. I was able to eat again because of his skill. I helped him and assisted him, we worked head to head for nine years and still I run into people we seen as patients, they smile and show me their teeth. They kept their teeth because we fixed them, and taught the importance of dental health. From the long hours at the office and the many dental emergencies we made a difference in the lives of others. Tom made a difference. Sadly a good bye, a smile and a pause will not be enough to close the gap he left. Heart felt wishes of wellness to Roberta, his ex-wife, Ellie, and Daniel his wonderful children. And to his second wife Jacquelyn, and her children. Be well, He loved you. Marina

Our family vacationed every year at Silvercryst. I was about 7 or 8 years old. Tommy had a job in the old days of sorting bottles of beer and soda, which I think he hated because he paid my sisters and me 50 cents to do for him. We thought it was cool to be a part of Silvercryst. That was in the 60s. I have seen him at the resort every now and then. I wish I could have talked to him more . I'm so, so sorry! He will be missed by many. Dave Singletary and Family
