Genelle Schutz Obituary
In Loving Memory of Genelle Schutz
Genelle Schutz, born in Duluth, Minnesota on June 26, 1960, brightened the lives of many with a big heart and a warm, everyday grace. She was the youngest of a large family whose unconditional love and support shaped her-Dad Don, Mom Maxine, sisters Gayle, Donnette, and Shelly, and brother Jack. As the baby of the family, she was deeply adored, sometimes playfully teased, and forever cherished.
Genelle endured the losses of her mom and her brother Jack at a young age, losses that broadened her circle in beautiful ways. She welcomed new family members with open arms-stepmom Carole, stepsisters Colette and Debbie, and stepbrother Billy-expanding a family bound by love that only grew stronger with time. She often recalled childhood stories with detail and joy, a testament to the warmth she carried with her.
A proud graduate of Morgan Park High School (1978), Genelle's vibrant personality shone through as a Pom Pom girl and among friends who became chosen family. From early on, she never knew a stranger and formed lasting friendships that echoed through the years.
Genelle pursued cosmetology after high school and found herself drawn to Montana, where her coworker Jennie introduced her to Don Schutz. They fell in love, married, and began a life together that brought them closer to family. Their journey led them to California for a time, and then back to Montana, where they welcomed Dustyn and Brianna. They then chose to raise their children in their beloved Montana, a place that offered a slower pace and a sense of community they both cherished.
Throughout her children's lives, Genelle poured unlimited love and support into every moment-cheering at activities, welcoming friends in need, and standing beside them through every up and down. Her home was a welcoming haven, open to anyone who needed shelter, warmth, or a listening ear. Her hugs were generous, her advice thoughtful, and her presence a steadying, comforting force.
Genelle and Don eventually parted ways, but their bond remained kind and collaborative as they continued to raise their children together. Genelle later found a new partner in Cecilio John Tafoya, whose presence brought additional joy to the family over 17 years. Together, Genelle and John embraced grandparenting with gusto, sharing countless joyful moments with David, Antonio, Kyle, Jaida, Jake, Addison, and Brooklyn. Genelle's light lives on in the compassion she taught her children and grandchildren, her resilience, and her joyful spirit.
Her warm, playful personality and nurturing nature left a lasting imprint on everyone who knew her. Genelle adored the simple pleasures-time with family, the beauty of the night sky-especially the moon, which reminded her of her mom watching over her. She cherished friendships, shared stories, and created memories that continue to bring comfort and smiles.
Genelle is survived by her son Dustyn and his children Kyle, Jake, Addison, and Brooklyn; her daughter Brianna; sisters Gayle, Donnette, Shelly, Debbie, and Colleen; and their families who carry forward her legacy of love and laughter. She is preceded in death by her dad Don, mom Maxine, stepmom Carole, brothers Jack and Billy, and the loves of her life, Don Schutz and John Tafoya.
Funeral services are Sunday, November 9, at 4:00 p.m. at Columbus Evangelical Church, followed by a reception at the New Atlas Bar. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes messages of comfort and memories of Genelle's warmth.
Genelle's spirit remains with us in the memories we share, the stories we tell, and the quiet moments when we feel her kindness guiding us forward. May we find peace in knowing she lived a life of love, generosity, and enduring connection.
