Charles Horwitz Obituary

Horwitz, Charles Richard

January 7, 1938 - June 8, 2025

I have always gone by Dick Horwitz. My time here was up on June 8, 2025 at the age of 87.

Parents were Henrietta Bluestein and Harold Horwitz. Younger brother was Bill. Married four times: 1) Marlene Ketcher; 2) tennis legend Justina Bricka; 3) Lois Levy; and 4) Sherry Miles with whom I was happiest.

I was rather well connected to Morris Shenker because my father befriended Morris in law school at Washington University. Henrietta and Harold introduced Morris to his wife, Lillian Koplar.

My two children with Justina are Lou, and Joe who unfortunately passed before me.

Probably best known for my tennis accomplishments. Given the accomplishments of Justina and our two sons, Lou and Joe, this foursome of ours based out of St. Louis, MO and being generational appears unrivaled in the history of tennis.

Justina, arguably the greatest women's athlete in Missouri's history, was a doubles partner to Margaret Smith Court, the greatest women's tennis player of all time. Justina competed in the U.S. Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. She beat Billie Jean King in singles and was a mixed doubles, semi-finalist at Wimbledon with Frank Froehling in 1964.

As far as American men's tennis goes, there are two indisputable rites of passage: competing in the national boys 16s or 18s in Kalamazoo, MI (i.e., the "Zoo") and the International Orange Bowl in Miami, FL. Every singles grand slam winner (or player of any repute) will have competed in at least one as a junior. Upon completing a rite of passage, eventually the question to be asked is whether you or anyone in your age group as a junior went on to win a singles Grand Slam.

The three of us competed at the Zoo and Orange Bowl. I was at the Zoo when Rod Laver played. Rod is the only person to win the Grand Slam two times and best ever IMHO. My boys were at the Zoo the same time as Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, and Michael Chang. An unprecedented number of singles grand slam champions from one age group.

Resting in peace.
