I saw Dan's name listed as an applicant for Heroes Way and then started reading about him online. I hope his name is posted and that others, like me, learn about the scholarship but also learn about him and the type of person he was and most of all are grateful for him and all the other soldiers out there that fight for what we take for granted.

Follow The Rainbow To Heaven.
=======================================
A Soldier had die out on the
battlefield;
Broken hearts are weeping For
Them,
But take comfort of knowing
that God had sent Them a
rainbow from heaven;
The Souls of the Soldiers
have gone to there home
in heaven
Our Loved One's has follow
God's lovely rainbow in the
sky;
All the way to the end of the
sky.
That leads all the way to the
other end of the Lord's
house in heaven,
So just keep on praying and
trust that God will send us
that same rainbow in the sky;
Where Our Loved One's are
waiting For You and For Me at
the end of the rainbow in
heaven.

Dan,
You know every time I am back in the old neighborhood I stand where you and I must have been a thousand times and remember all the games we played, the saves you'd make on some of my best shots, and the days that seemed like they would never end.
What I wouldn't give for just one more game.
Dan, you know it was an honor to know you and to have been a part of your life. You were everything everyone on this page has described, and I was proud to be called your friend.
Continue to watch over your mom, Bob, Nick, and Sue. They have been incredible through all of this.
And when you see me standing in the street remembering games that ended years ago, just know that you will never be forgotten and I'll expect a rematch when my day finally comes.
You were the best Dan.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Daniel, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I visited your grave today, the first Memorial Day since your passing. There were four young men there. By their age, I thought they might be your classmates from Vianney. I hung back to let them pay their respects, looking at some of the other tombstones so as not to make them feel rushed. They stayed a while, but noticed me anyway. One of them came over with a camera and asked me to take their picture with your tombstone and the tributes around it. I asked if he knew you and it turns out that they served with you in Iraq. He said he and you ran together over there. He is from Columbia. He had heard there were a 1,000 people at your funeral. I told him I had been there, that my dad was a Knight of Columbus honor guard, and a little about the funeral, the eulogies, and the Patriot Guard. I also thanked them for their service and expressed my hope that they can remain here with their families. I mentioned how Troop 662 was going to adopt your squad at this time last year. They were still at your grave when I left. I pray this war ends soon. Rest in Peace, Dan. Though I never knew you, I think of your sacrifice daily.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To the family of 1st Lt. Daniel P. Riordan: My name is Heather and I was a high school class mate of Jimy Malone, who passed the same day as your loved one. I have waited a long time to sign this guestbook, along with the other men who were with Jimy that day because anything that I have to say can attempt to be comforting and caring, but you know as well as I do that the words come and go, but the memories live on. I would like to thank you for allowing your loved one to make the ultimate sacrifice for us all and to thank him for working with my friend. It means the world to my husband and me, and again, we just want to thank you and remind you that you will all be in our prayers.

I wish I could say I had met or knew Dan, but I did not. My son is also an alum of Vianney. I've cried for the loss that his loved ones must feel, and can't imagine the pain that is left by his loss. His story has touched me very deeply.
It amazes me that he is a part of my thoughts almost daily and I pray that the family's pain will be eased. To think about someone you've never met ever....each and every day, just proves how he could reach people, how much he cared about people, his love for people, and that even now he is reaching people......what a special young man he was.
God Bless your family Dan, for it is through them you became the man you were, and through them you will live on.
Thank you for all that you did.

Hello again D,
I just couldn't seem to rid of these words weighing upon my heart. So I composed a song...
Song Title: Yesterday
Written by: Tiffany Kick on July 27, 2007
To this day I remember
When I got the news of you.
The tears, the anguish and the sound of my heart breaking
As I watched them put you in the ground
All the while aching
For you…
Tomorrow has come and gone
And I’m facing yet another day
I’m left here holding on
I can’t help but feel this way
The Life I once knew…
Had me and you
Now I’m living
Living for our yesterday
I can’t seem to let you go.
But I hear you say you’re fine
And we’ll be together again in time.
Soon love, soon love.
It’s just hard moving on
I know you want me to be strong
And I know your watching me from above
Saying…
Tomorrow has come and gone
And I’m facing yet another day
I’m left here holding on
I can’t help but feel this way
The Life I once knew…
Had me and you
Now I’m living
Living for our yesterday
For your memory I will cherish and our love will never end.
You’ll always be remembered as my true love
And my best friend.
Tomorrow has come and gone
And I’m facing yet another day
I’m left here holding on
I can’t help but feel this way
The Life that I once knew…
Had me and you,
Now I’m living
Living for our yesterday.
I’m just living
Living for our yesterday.
You will always be…
In my yesterday.

The first time I met Dan was here, in Iraq. He smiled, introduced himself and asked me "Can you do me a HUGE favor?" I replied, "Of Course." He had just returned from a Combat Out Post and knew how hungry for "HOT CHOW" his Soldiers were. Thinking ONLY of his troops Dan, knew I could deliver the Forty plates of food to his Soldiers.
From that first day, in early May, until our loss Dan was ALWAYS smiling. He bent over backwards to make sure his boys were set up for success. HE is the Soldier we all strive to be.
I am sincerely sorry for your loss Riordan family. Dan was an amazing man and he'll be that angel watching over both of his families. Keeping you in my prayers.

Dan: We love you, we miss you. Rick and I could not wait till you were back and we were making wedding plans for Tiffany and you. There were plans of fishing, hunting, camping, boating and grandkids running about. You would have been a terrific father and would have kept Tiffany in line. The two of you were definitely meant for each other. It will be hard for Tiffany to go on, but we know that you are watching over her and you will give her the strength to go on. You will always be a part of our family, our hearts and our lives. Thank you for sharing your life with us! We love you! Rick and Julie Kick and Family.

Love, I sent the following to you last night at the damn. Seeing as that was the last place we went together to enjoy the sunset. It was here where you told me not to worry and then laughed because you knew that it was inevitable. I remember you kissing my forehead and giving me a hug. And not just any hug, but the one where you pick me up off my feet. You always did give the best hugs. When my tears came you wiped them away and said "I love you and always will. Distance will never change that. I am always with you, in your heart. Now get up here." D, you kissed my forehead again and then we sat on the back of your tailgate and watched the most beautiful sunset while enjoying one last beer together and telling corny jokes.
My Letter...
2 year Anniversary - July 15, 2007
Dan,
I didn’t know where to send this because I’m not sure of Heaven’s address. Your mom said it was my heart which made me happy and sad at the same time. You know me, never at a loss of words but at that moment I could only squeeze her hand.
Anyway I’m sending this to you via helium filled balloon to wish you a Happy Anniversary Love. I wish you were here to celebrate with me. Oh I know you’re here in a spiritual sense but how nice would it be to able to wrap my arms around you and press my lips against yours?
I’ll admit that it’s been hard accepting your death but I know that you left this world and entered Heaven as an American HERO. Just incase you didn’t know…The Army awarded a purple heart for the wounds you received during the third IED explosion as well as the bronze star for your “ultimate sacrifice.”
D, just know that my heart misses you. I know that I will forever remember you as my best friend and lover. You will always be my, “Hubby.” Even though I am unable to make sense of this I am sure that I will see you again in my dreams and then again when I’ve earned my ticket to Heaven.
Give Uncle Claude a hug for me and tell him that I am sorry that I wasn’t able to visit him at the hospital. Say hello to Blizzard and the horses. If you happen to see any of my relatives please send them my love too.
I’ll never forget you, nor do I want to. I know that you would tell me that you love me and that my happiness is your number one priority …I just don’t know when or if I’ll be able to let go because I love you so much. I still cry myself to sleep and sometimes on the way home at night. It’s hard imagining living in a home that will never be filled with our children’s laughter.
D, I’ll love you forever and ever cross my heart. You always said that I was your saving grace but we both know that you were mine. You were an angel when we met and now you’re my guardian angel till I see you again. Please just wait patiently as I am not sure when the good Lord will call upon me.
Until I see you again know that I love you with all my heart and soul. I am proud of you and know that your sacrifice wasn’t in vain and that you believed in the cause.
I miss you Love.
All my love forever and ever,
Kevin Mueller

My wife already left a message, I just got back to a computer to leave mine. Sorry its late. Dan and I were training buddies at FT Benning during IOBC and nieghbors in Killeen when we were at FT Hood TX. My wife was still in WA. So I had some free time and it was mostly spent with Dan. Whether it was battling his cousins online with HALO, or sitting on the front porch wearing stetsons and smoking cigars. Dan was a friend that I will never forget. He was a proud PLT LDR and motivated to lead his men. My heart goes out to the family and friends of this extroadiary man. Dan, I hope your canteen never goes dry on Fiddler's Green. I am a friend of Dan's Grandfather, Bill Riordan. We usher together at Immaculate Conception Church of Dardenne. Bill told me this Saturday, July 9, that he had lost his grandson. As a grandfather myself, I know he is devastated. I will have an entry put in this weeks church bulletin, so that all our 4,000 families can pray for, and honor the sacrifice that Dan made for us. My thoughts and prayers will continue for Dan and all his family.

Thank you for taking time to speak with us the other evening. Our hearts are so heavy for you. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with your family and Tiffany. There is no doubt that Dan has had an amazing impact on the lives of so many. Brandon is privileged to have served with Dan. They seemed to just understand each other on so many levels and they had alot of laughs together. If you come down for the Ft. Hood Memorial, it will be an honor to meet you.

I knew Dan through Megan while he was at SEMO. He was always such a nice kid-the perfect gentleman. He talked about his plans for the future in the military often-his desire to serve and lead others. Our family remembered him as the "kid who wore cowboy boots." Our hearts go out to you and Dan's family. As you read through these messages, may you find comfort knowing what a positive role model your son was for so many. He was loved by many and will always be remembered by those who met him.

To the Riordan family:
I got the honor to meet Dan both at Fort Benning and Fort Hood. I got to know him better though at Fort Hood, since he and my husband had an apartment next door to each other off post. Dan was a person who was giving and polite. I remember the time he picked me up from the airport because my husband couldn't and took me back when my luggage was lost. We all went out to the bar and had dinner and movies to pass the time while down there and when it was my husband's time to go to Iraq in October he did all he could to help him out with packing stuff up and getting it to storage. He was an unselfish person, who always put others before him. He protected this country and I can't say enough to tell you what a wonderful person whom you raised, I am lucky to have shared the memories I did with your son. Let me say this you are truly blessed even though he is gone with that said, my heart goes out to you and your family at this time and in the days ahead.

My dearest love…
Words alone won’t be able to truly paint a picture of my beloved D. He was and forever will be my knight in shining armor. We were two people who found faith in the good Lord, who led us to each other one star lit night. Memories that I have are forever embedded in my heart, my mind, and my soul. This isn't goodbye love, but a mere transition. Until we see each other again I pray that you’ll live your life through mine. Blessed are we who overcame ourselves and found a greater love for each other.
You’ll forever be my saving grace.

Dan is my best friend. I can describe him in the same fashion as all the wonderful things that have already been written about him. There are some noteworthy things about Dan that I would like to share that I have not heard and there are some things about him which will always be just for me in my mind. Dan was the first of my friends to come to my father's funeral in 2000 and he was the last one to leave. From what I've heard from one of his platoon Sgts who was shot the first week Dan was in Taji, "Dan was coming for me before I even hit the ground. I had to yell at him to stay back and that I would be okay. Dan wasn't thinking about himself, only how he was going to get to me."
Dans friends, family, and soldiers came first. Through the pain and tears of my fathers wake, he never left my side. I honored him on his day of remembrance in the same way. I'll never forget his fnny high pitched giggle when something was only margianally funny and how it could turn into a deep roar of laughter in an instant. I dubbed this following saying myself while reflecting on Dan the other day:
"Dan was the busiest man I knew; a person who always had something going on, however, he always found time for EVERY ONE of his friends and family."
That to me was pretty impressive when I catch myself complaining about how i don't want to do something or go somewhere. That was never a problem with him. I guess what i'm getting at is that we should all be so outgoing.
Sure I will miss him, but I believe that someday I will run into him again where there are no schedules, short visitations, or dangerous callings to interupt our time together. So for now Dan, I just want to say that I love you, I'll miss you, and I will see you later. In the meantime, keep the discount beers cold and the country music playing.
To Dan's family, you know I'm there for you. I love you alot. Just pick of the phone and ask. No task is to difficult for me to help with. I'll always have time for you guys and gals. Take care and God bless.

Dear Riordon family: I am Dan's former academic advisor from SEMO. For me to remember his name and his face is testament to what kind of student and person Dan was.I don't always remember the names of the thousands of students I've advised here at SEMO since 1989, but Dan's name and face are easy to recall. He was a first-class student, the kind I liked to see walking into my office. He was always prepared, very polite and well mannered and ready to do what was asked. How proud you must be. People like Dan make our lives rewarding. Please accept my sincere condolensces and know that my prayers are with you. God Bless you as you face the times ahead.

are ever connected in our grief over the loss of the boys. My nephew,
Joel House, was killed with your Daniel on June 23 in Taji. Knowing
that they were
doing what they were called to do is a small comfort as we move forward
in the days ahead. In this ever-growing world it is amazing how large
our community is when tragedy strikes. So sorry for your loss. I am
positive that Joel's parents would love to share stories of our
soldiers. Please feel free to contact me. In our prayers and thought

Definite heart felt prayers and concern go out to the Riordan Family in this time of grieving and loss. May Christ be close to each moment as you grieve. I have prayed that you would find the peace in Jesus that surpasses all understanding and pray that you would rest in God's sovereign hand at work in the world.
My family just had a passing of a loved one this past Monday as well and how timely did this psalm come to mind for comfort of God's complete supremacy over our small lives. It reveals how our days are numbered and are insignificant in the span of eternity. Brings much humility and points toward a eternal reality beyond our breaths.
Psalm 39:5-6
4 "Show me, O LORD, my life's end
and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting is my life.
5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Each man's life is but a breath"
Nick and Family, my family mourns with you and seeks to find rest in Christ in a time when world events, both personal and national, seem to show nothing but chaos.

Dan's life, though short, was well-lived. I am filled with nothing but wonderful memories of a kind, caring, responsible, young man.
Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

To Dan's Family & Friends:
Like many of you, I find myself at work on this Monday morning (after Dan's visitation and funeral services)not quite ready to embrace my daily routine. . .not quite ready to act "normal" after such a devastating loss. The fact that the earth should continue to spin on its axis, in light of the sudden changes that so drastically affect our being, seems to me a mysterious phenonmenon. Nonetheless, I have come to know through personal experience that this continuity of life is the best remedy for our heartache and sorrows. With family and friends to support us and memories to comfort us, the human spirit will be resilient once again. That said, I'd like to leave you with a couple Dan memories:
Dan was one of my brother's best friends in all the world. Together, they shared a mutual respect and admiration for all things. . .well. . .dangerous (for lack of a better word). I can specifically recall the time Jay and Dan constructed a Potato Gun out of plastic plumbing. They painted it a camoflauge pattern and inscribed it with the following expression: "Iraq has scuds. We have spuds." They stood in our yard, which thankfully backed to woods, and launched potatoes for hundreds and hundreds of feet. This contraption made a deafening noise and quickly earned the nickname "Tater Hater."
Jay and Dan also had a fascination with fireworks. Dan spent the past couple 4th of July holidays at our house. He and my brother were self-proclaimed pyrotechnicians, and they assumed responsibility for putting on a homemade fireworks display that never disappointed. As is turns out, we hosted our annual display this past Saturday night (the same day as Dan's funeral service). With every flicker, every flash, every rumble, every roar, I know my family was remembering Dan and feeling more patriotic this holiday than ever before!
In closing, I'd like to say that it is not at all surprising that Jay and Dan went on to explore dangerous career paths. Dan, a military officer, and Jay, a police officer, were both born to serve and protect. They shared an understanding and respect for one another that will go unrivaled. I know that Jay will miss Dan terribly; I also know that Jay takes great comfort in the fact he will forever have a guardian angel.
With love and prayers!
Marie

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

did not know dan, but my nephews or from vianney. i work a party on saturday, and about 8 vianney class of 2001 boys were there. in honor of your son, they had the singer sing the red, white and blue song. it was very emotional for the boys and a nice tribute for your son. so your son is remembered by classmates and people who don't even know him, but will remember his name, he is a son, brother, grandson, cousin, nephew, friend, and griffin. so sorry for your loss, a vianney aunt.

We did not know Dan but felt like we did through Jeanine. She spoke with pride of his dedication to his men and the duty he was called to serve. Denny and I were heartened to witness the outpouring of love and support that was displayed at the visitation as hundreds and hundreds waited in line to show their respect for this great American hero who was taken from us way too soon. We will always remember the patriotic display by friends and strangers along the procession today from St. Catherine Laboure to Jefferson Barracks. We met some of his buddies from the SEMO ROTC and heard how much Dan was admired and loved. We sincerely hope this incredible display of support brings some comfort to the Riordan/Windish/Rainey family.

Dearest Jeanine
When Barbara T. called with the news last weekend words can not express how my heart just broke for you and your family.
Then I tried to remember your time here in Texas …. trying to recall the happier funny stories of your children.
I hope in the near future you can find comfort in knowing that you are the reason Danny turned out to be such a remarkable human being. I am sure he took great comfort in knowing how well loved he was by you.
Twincerely,
Karla

My thoughts and prayers go out to Dan's family during these times. Dan is a hero to this country and I am very grateful for his actions and his service in the military. I can recall times in highschool when Dan would talk to me about joining the military (mostly because we were both interested in the Air Force), I am glad that he was doing what he deeply desired to do in life. Dan will be be greatly missed but never forgotten.

The fact that so many people from so many places have taken the time to acknowledge what Dan has meant to them is all it takes to understand who he was. He was selfless. No matter where I go, or what things I accomplish, I will always have a role model; someone to look up to. He wanted the best for everyone, and was willing to give everything. I'm glad I was able call Dan a friend, and I'm proud to have known a hero. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
