Erwin Sonderegger Obituary

Sonderegger, Erwin Frederick age 102, Wednesday, March 30, 2016. A baker for more than 40 years in the St. Louis area, Erwin and his ever-loving wife Mary operated several bake shops. They were best known as the proprietors of the Ferguson Bake Shop on Church Street, where they ran the quintessential Mom & Pop store from 1947-1972. Mary worked in the store, and ran the business. Erwin and his brother Arnold were the bakers. The Sonderegger kids, all six of them, worked at the bakery at various times. The growing family first lived above the bakery at 100 Church Street and then moved a couple of blocks away to 34 North Maple Avenue, where Mary and Erwin lived in the early 1950s. Erwin was the beloved husband of the late Mary Kathleen Sonderegger (nee Rodgers). They were married for nearly 75 years before she died in 2010. They met when Mary moved to St. Louis from southeast Missouri and she went to work for Erwin's mother as a housekeeper. She then went to work at the Sonderegger Bakery in north St. Louis, and met the owner's son, Erwin. They were married in 1935 in St. Charles. They had six children: Margaret Helen Bludau of San Jose, CA, John Arthur (Carole) of St. Charles, MO, Thomas Rodgers (Ann) of Sappington, MO, Penelope Jane (Bill) Wehrle of St. Peters, MO, Frederick Carl (Susan) of Brooklyn Park, MN and the late Ronald Erwin (surviving Kathryn) of Reston, VA; Erwin was the dear grandfather of 22 and great-grandfather of 36; he was the dear son of the late Arnold and Margaret Sonderegger; our dear uncle, great-uncle and friend. Services: Funeral from KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL, 10151 Gravois, Monday, April 4, 12:30 p.m. Interment Park Lawn Cemetery. Contributions to the American Diabetes Association appreciated. Visitation Sunday, 4-8 p.m.

My dad was the captain of the Ferguson Fire Department back in the early days. My siblings (7) and I so looked forward to Friday nights when dad would bring home a stolen. Ferguson is forever in our hearts. Thanks for the memories and the sweets.

Erwin was such a delightful gentleman who loved his wife, Mary, so dearly. He loved music and was devoted to his wife, his family, his work, and his music. I had the privilege of knowing Erwin and Mary during their stay at Parkside Retirement Living. Erwin--you are missed here on earth, but you and Mary must be dancing in Heaven now.

I grew up in Ferguson. My brother David Cook and Tommy Sonderegger had a snow cone business when they were young kids. Dave & I just talked about it last year ! Went to Vogt school and before school we had to go to the Best Bakery in the world. They had a pineapple apple stolen my dad bought every Monday. I still miss that place.
I Love Ferguson and Sonderegger's bakery. Thank you Erwin & Mary for making it a very special childhood.
It was like a Norman Rockwell City then.

Your bakery was such a wonderful part of growing up in Ferguson. My mom and dad, Alice and Russell Cole, were faithful customers from when they first came to Ferguson in 1950 until their deaths. I remember how special it was when I was old enough to ride my bicycle to Church Street with my friend Josalea. We would always go to the library for a Nancy Drew book, stop by the police station to visit the policemen and the last stop was your bakery for a Long John.
Thanks for the wonderful memories.
