Erwin Frederick Sonderegger

Sonderegger, Erwin Frederick age 102, Wednesday, March 30, 2016. A baker for more than 40 years in the St. Louis area, Erwin and his ever-loving wife Mary operated several bake shops. They were best known as the proprietors of the Ferguson Bake Shop on Church Street, where they ran the quintessential Mom & Pop store from 1947-1972. Mary worked in the store, and ran the business. Erwin and his brother Arnold were the bakers. The Sonderegger kids, all six of them, worked at the bakery at various times. The growing family first lived above the bakery at 100 Church Street and then moved a couple of blocks away to 34 North Maple Avenue, where Mary and Erwin lived in the early 1950s. Erwin was the beloved husband of the late Mary Kathleen Sonderegger (nee Rodgers). They were married for nearly 75 years before she died in 2010. They met when Mary moved to St. Louis from southeast Missouri and she went to work for Erwin's mother as a housekeeper. She then went to work at the Sonderegger Bakery in north St. Louis, and met the owner's son, Erwin. They were married in 1935 in St. Charles. They had six children: Margaret Helen Bludau of San Jose, CA, John Arthur (Carole) of St. Charles, MO, Thomas Rodgers (Ann) of Sappington, MO, Penelope Jane (Bill) Wehrle of St. Peters, MO, Frederick Carl (Susan) of Brooklyn Park, MN and the late Ronald Erwin (surviving Kathryn) of Reston, VA; Erwin was the dear grandfather of 22 and great-grandfather of 36; he was the dear son of the late Arnold and Margaret Sonderegger; our dear uncle, great-uncle and friend.
