George James Obituary
James, George W.
March 23, 1934 - December 5, 2025
George W. James passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on December 5, 2025 at the age of 91. Devoted husband of 65 years to Georgia James (nee Lampros), beloved father of Ernest W. James, Diana (Bill) Grayson, and Dr. William P. James, and adored Papou of Alexander, Peter, and George Grayson, and Laura and Daniel James. Survived, also, by his sister Dorothy Pappas. Preceded in death by his brother Ernest W. James, and sisters Kay Tsevis and Sebbe Dafnides. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, George was the son of Greek immigrants, William and Efthalia James of Sopiki. A graduate of Soldan High school, George later attended Washington University where he received his Business Degree in 1956. After college, he was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army where he served for 2 years. In 1958, while driving by the Tivoli Theatre on Delmar Blvd., he noticed the beautiful young cashier in the box-office. She immediately became the love of his life, and George and Georgia were married on February 14, 1960. Following in his father's and uncle's footsteps, George spent his entire life in film exhibition. One of his proudest achievements was purchasing the Hi-Pointe Theatre in 1977, which he successfully operated alongside his wife and three children. An avid walker, George would frequently be seen by his friends, neighbors, and movie-going "regulars" on his daily walks to and from the Hi-Pointe. George will forever be remembered for his friendly smile, care-free attitude, and unique sense of humor. A visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 9, 2025 with Trisagion Service to follow at 11:00 AM at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 4967 Forest Park Ave, St. Louis, MO. 63108 with Fr. Doug Papilus and Fr. Michael Arbanas officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church or Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
