Gertrude Buholzer "Trudy" Busch obituary

Gertrude Busch Obituary

Busch, Gertrude Trudy Buholzer died at her home on May 11, 2016 at the age of 89. She was the daughter of the late William and Martina Buholzer and sister of Kurt and the late Willy Buholzer. Trudy was born in Lucerne, Switzerland where at the age of 22 she met her husband-to-be, the late August Gussie Busch Jr. in her family's restaurant, The Old Swiss House. Our dad was immediately enchanted by her presence. He went back to the restaurant the second day to begin a fairytale courtship and marriage. Trudy and Gussie were blessed to have seven children whom they adored and raised at Grant's Farm: Adolphus Busch IV, Beatrice Busch von Gontard (Adie), Peter Busch (Joan), Trudy Busch Valentine (the late John D. Valentine), William Busch (Christi), Andrew Busch (Kim) and the late Christina Martina Busch. She was the proud and beloved Grandmother to 31 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Our mom was a woman of wisdom, intelligence, strength, and grace. She was as beautiful on the inside as her stunning looks were on the outside. She was an avid reader and a true explorer. Our mother was fluent in German, Italian, French, and English. She loved the outdoors and hiked the mountains of Switzerland and the trails of Missouri. She swam in oceans, rivers, and lakes across the world. She was an an accomplished equestrian and the first person to point out wildlife in fields and forests. Mom always exhibited the greatest passion and love for life. Our mother made a beautiful and loving home for all of us at Grant's Farm. She was a graceful entertainer to friends and dignitaries. Mom instilled in us many values, manners, and a strong love for God. She loved arranging Sunday Mass for her family and friends at her beloved St. Hubert's Chapel. The last seven years of our mother's life taught us and our children the true meaning of compassion and unconditional love. We know she was welcomed into heaven by her angel daughter, Christina Martina. We are so appreciative of the 46 years of care given by her faithful assistant, Ruth Gosik. Services: A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the chapel at Mercy Center on Geyer Road on Monday, May 16 at 1:30 p.m. No visitation. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials in honor of Dr. John Morris and the Knight Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, 4488 Forest Park Avenue Suite 130 St. Louis, MO 63108.

I remember when she came to the farm. She was a beautiful, sweet lady. When Peter and Trudy were small, they built beautiful two story playhouse for them and I babysat the two there many times. My Grandfather was John Wallace. He worked at the farm and was “Little Augies” boss. They were great people. When my Grandfather died, they told my Grandma she could live there as long as she wanted and they continued to pay her his salary until she died.

I remember Aunt Trudys dedication to construction of the chapel on the grounds of Grants Farm. She wanted so much to inject a spiritual quality to the life of the place and her family.
And she did.

I always enjoyed talking to Trudy about our common Swiss heritage. About 25 years ago, during one of her sojourns in Lucerne, she made a point of visiting Steinhof, the tiny Swiss village where my great grandfather August Schlafly was born in 1850. A few years later, when I was dating Ulrike (who's now my wife), she said it was great that a brewery owner of Swiss descent was dating a German Fraulein. (She pointed out that she was a Swiss Fraulein who had married a brewery owner of German descent.) She was so pleased that she hosted an engagement party for Ulrike and me at Grant's Farm.

With her joie de vivre and kindness, Trudy enriched the lives of all who knew here. I consider myself fortunate to be included in this group.

As a local craftsman, I had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Busch on a number of occasions. She was always kind and gracious. I'm certain she will be missed by all who knew her. My condolences to the family.

As a little girl growing up on Pardee Road, up the street from Grant's Farm, I remember Sunday evenings in the early 1960's ... when you would hear the clip clop of the horses. Everyone would run outside to see Gussie at the helm of the wagon with his family on board. I remember Mrs. Busch always waving and greeting us with her beautiful smile! A beautiful memory remains after all these years!
God Bless!
