Calhoun, Jeanette Delphene Osborne
96, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, February 9 of an apparent heart attack.
Born in Amsterdam, New York on November 17, 1924, she was the only child of Lydia and Gerald Osborne. She graduated from St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam. After graduation, she married Millard Calhoun and had three children. Jeanette is survived by daughters Cheryl Loomis (Gilbert) of Bend, Oregon, and Judith Calhoun of St. Louis, Missouri. She was preceded in death by Millard, who died 17 years ago, and son, William (wife Margret, surviving), who died three years ago. She also is survived by three grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. The couple was married 61 years.
Jeanette and Millard raised their family in Amsterdam where Millard worked for Mohasco. Jeanette managed the dress department at Lurie's Department Store. In 1968, Millard was transferred to Hardin, Montana and then, again, to Merced, California. Upon his retirement in 1979, the couple moved to Bozeman, Montana and began their dream of traveling the U.S.
After Millard's death, Jeanette moved to St. Louis and lived at Pacific Place, a senior residence. There she met new friends and learned to love living in the Midwest. She was a devoted member of Holy Redeemer Parish in Webster Groves, Missouri and never went to bed without first saying her rosary. She was a wonderful wife and mother, and always put her family first. She was an excellent seamstress and had a passion for knitting beautiful afghans, scarves and mittens. Her macaroni and cheese and apple pie were the absolute best.
The family thanks the staff and residents of Pacific Place for helping to make Jeanette feel so welcome and loved.
Services: Daughters Cheryl and Judith will travel to Amsterdam in early Spring to hold a memorial Mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She will be buried alongside her husband.
Contributions in Jeanette's honor may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 156 Main Street, Amsterdam, New York 12010.
