Jennie Crittenden

Crittenden, Jennie

A woman of many names, Jennie Marie Crittenden, born Lucia Giovannina Patania, known as "Penny," passed away peacefully at the young age of 95 on Sunday January 10, 2021 after receiving the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in the summer of 2020. Beloved mother to Dale (husband of Sherry) and the late Joan; beloved Nana to Jeff (husband of Jolene), Carrie, Greg, and Charlie; beloved sister to the late Mary "Pat" Whitman and the late Sam Patania; beloved aunt to Harvey, Tom, Donna, Christina, and the late Bobby; beloved great grandmother to Evan, Liam, Isabel, Eva, and Anna; and friend to countless others.

Jennie grew up on the Hill in St. Louis and eventually, with her sister Mary, raised their families in a small house on Edwards. From this humble beginning she traveled the world, passing along this love of travel to her children and grandchildren. She loved to volunteer and spend much of her time out on the town. You may remember her from her time volunteering at St. Louis Oasis (where she would teach children how to read), the Fox Theatre, or the Science Center. Or from her time styling hair at Stix Baer & Fuller, running the Carousel in Crestwood Mall, working out at the YMCA, hanging at the Seniors Club at St. Ambrose, or any number of other places. In her youth and in her prime, she loved to dance and found great joy in music. She spent the last few years of her life happily reconnecting with her close family, and they will fondly remember this time with her for the rest of their lives. Her greatest treasures in life were her children, and she was proud every day to see what they had done for themselves and the lives they had built.

My thoughts and prayers to Jennie's family and friends. I remember her fondly from the many St Ambrose luncheon we shared. Her daughter Joan and I worked together years ago and it was nice to see her there with her mother. She was so lost without Joan. Jennie always looks lovely from her perfectly styled hair to her fashionable attire, even special outfits for each holiday. Peace.

My deepest sympathy to the family. Penny lived across the street from our family . She was friends with my mother, Serina Pendino. Penny was always very kind. Prayers for your family.
