John, what a wonderfully handsome man. He was a delight to talk to. When I had a conversation with John, you could tell he was truly interested in what you had to say by the way he looked at you. What a blessing he was on this earth. I know he will be missed.

My son, Jeremy, was a good friend of John's He informed me of this sad news last week. I knew John from scouts and baseball, which his Dad coached. He was a frequent visitor to our home...a very polite young man with good manners and very nice parents. My son lives abroad and when he visits John always came by to see he and his family. During these visits I came to think of John as a soft spoken, gentle giant. He will be missed. Sincere condolences Susan. David and the entire family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I haven't seen John in decades. But that doesn't change the impact he had on my life. People are like stars that cast light in all directions. Depending on how closely we find ourselves to those individuals at different times, they illuminate our lives.

Friends in childhood are different than friends we have as adults. And those who span those portions of our lives have an insight about us unrivaled by even family because of confidences shared over the years. John was a childhood friend of mine. He was the younger brother of Susan, my classmate, and David. Their household was one that many of the neighborhood kids felt comfortable. Their mother was so very kind and the very epitome of a "Mom."

Whether playing with the swings, marbles, their Six-Million-Dollar Man action figure, or any host of toys, time spent with them was an investment in imagination and creative thoughtful exploration.

We had a field (technically a flood plain) behind our subdivision and a woods beyond that complete with it's own creek. There were countless adventures and imagined discoveries in those summer days long gone. But those collected moments were the foundation of who each of us was to become. John was much like my own brother. He played hard and had an active imagination.

I cannot overstate what a Blessing it was to grow up living in our neighborhood with the Carpenters. John and his family are what my grandfather called, "Good People." Though it's been ages since I've seen John, I have a part of him in my heart. He illuminated my life as a child and now his light will radiate stronger than it has before.

Peace to all who mourn his loss and take comfort of that part of him that you carry with you.
