John was my best friend growing up (We were born 9 days apart) and spent many a day and miles cruising in my car during our high school days. He was my Best Man at my wedding. I think of him often

John was always very kind and generous to younger members of faculty. He was competent and precise in his work and that made him someone you wanted to emulate. John represented the sunnier side of academia.

When I arrived at SLU as Chair of the Biology Department, John greeted me and told me that he would do what he could do to help me get at the job. He understood undergraduate education well and yes did help me on several occasions. John became a friend.

I was Chair of the Biology Department when John left the administrative post and rejoined the faculty of biology to teach, advise students (and faculty), and basically anything one might ask to help with in biology. He was a fantastic teacher, advisor, mentor, steward and loyal friend. A great friend that we will miss terribly.
