Joseph Auffenberg Obituary

Auffenberg, Joseph Michael of Kirkwood, Missouri, at the age of 50. Born December 28, 1963, in St. Louis, Missouri. Beloved son of the late James A. Auffenberg and Barbara A. Auffenberg. Surviving are his four siblings: James, Jr. (Ellen), Thomas (Dale), Christopher (Patricia) and Anne Rabenberg; his nephews and nieces: Claire (Preston), Matthew, Michael, Ryan (Anna), Greg (Carolyn) Elizabeth (Davidfiancé), David, Christopher, Jr., Maggie, Timmy and Ellie; his great-nephews Milo and Carter and his great-niece Laine, numerous cousins, and his aunts and uncles: James and Mary Coppedge, Robert J. Auffenberg, Josephine Auffenberg and Sharon Auffenberg. We will be forever grateful to the people of St. Louis ARC for all their years of loving care and concern for Joe. There is so much one can say about Joe that it is hard to know what to choose. He was a gift of love to all who knew him, and many became better people as a result of knowing him. He accomplished this without a lot of planning or work, but simply by being Joe¢$ºa loving, welcoming, accepting, grateful, compassionate and very, very funny person who made quick friendships with almost everyone who cared to be his friend. Joe might have set a world record for the number of birthday, anniversary, Valentine, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas cards sent over his lifetime. He always wanted to make those days special for those he cared for by remembering them with a card, and so many were deeply touched by his thoughtfulness. One of Joe's favorite volunteer duties was serving as a board member for St. Louis ARC. He enjoyed the opportunity to contribute on important decisions affecting people with developmental disabilities, and he was particularly fond of the camaraderie and food which followed those meetings. Joe's life will make a lasting impression on the world as those who learned from him about what is important in life continue to teach others what he taught them. Services: A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of The Immacolata, 8900 Clayton Road, Richmond Heights on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Louis ARC, 1177 North Warson Rd., St. Louis, MO, 63132. The family will receive friends at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester, Kirk wood on Friday, February 14, 2014 from 3 to 8 p.m. www.boppchapel.com

Dear Dale, Tom, Auffenberg family,
Shelley mentioned that Joe had passed away. Although I did not Joe, it looks as if brought joy to the people he knew. As Joe is promoted to his "New Life" may his good memories linger in your hearts. Sending you God's grace, peace and joy during these difficult times. Warmly, Cousin Victoria MacDonald and family

I have considered The Auffenberg Family to be my second family for pretty much my entire life. Well, since I was in kindergarten. I can't tell you the memories I have of Joe and Anne and Chris driving us all around town. Sometimes Jamie and Tom would hall us around town as well. I learned from Joe that everyone has the compassion for love and everyone deserves to receive it as well. I remember many conversations with Mrs. Auffenberg about the choices she made with her children. I can't tell you how Joe was such a bright spot to his parents. The three of them later in life were inseparable. They were not just family but they truly loved eachothers company. When my Dad died Mr. Auffenberg made sure I knew he was there in his quiet way. The number of trips and family time I have spent with all the Auffenbergs and especially Anne and Joe. My 17 year old daughter,Eliza has a best friend Hayley and her sister Chloe who has Downs has taught Eliza so much. Just like I learned from Anne and her family how to include all people with needs into my life. Eliza wants to be a Special Needs teacher and works with the Special Olympics and The Best Buddy Program here. I think Joe would have loved talking to Eliza about all she has learned. He would have taught her more than she could learn in school. I am just realizing how much we have lost! I have been home with flu and surviving cancer. I love you all as if we are family and that will be forever.

I knew Joe because he was my neighbor. I very often saw him walking in front of my house and around my neighborhood, and it always brought a smile to my face to see him. We would often say hello and sometimes he'd stop to watch my kids or pet my dog. The most memorable conversation was one day when he joined me as I was walking my dog and as we walked together, he told me a long story about his mother and a party the family had had for her(maybe a birthday party). He told it in such a caring way that I could tell how important his family was to him. I am so very sorry for your loss.

To Joe's siblings,
My mom was Liz Gilbert who worked for years at SLARC. She & Joe had a mutual admiration society going. I saw Joe at lots of SLARC events. What a guy! I know he loved my mom and it was wonderful to see him at mom's funeral. My heart breaks for you all and you are in my prayers.

Auffenberg Family-
I am so sorry to hear that you lost Joe. Six years ago, God blessed us with a vivacious little girl with special needs. She reminds me a lot of Joe. She was singing her heart out at Mass this weekend, and it made me smile as I thought back to being in the pew next to him at Mass at Immacolata. He was always there. I can only hope that world will embrace her the way they did Joe and that her life can be as full as his. He was truly loved by so many people.
You are in my family's thoughts and prayers-

I supported Joe through St Louis ARC for almost a year in 2008/2009. He was always a pleasure to work with and I enjoyed my time getting to know him and his family. I would pick him up from day program and spend the evening with him. We watched old TV shows and he always wanted to eat at Miss Sherry's cafe or a Chinese restaurant near his house. I also enjoyed taking him bowling on Saturday mornings! He and his entire team were really impressive! We went to every event held by the ARC as well as other events like Taste of St Louis. I had not seen Joe for several years but I never have and never will forget him! Thoughts and prayers for Joe and the whole Auffenberg family. Joe will be missed by many! I am lucky to have gotten to work with him.

The Mayor of Berkshire has most likely taken over as the Mayor of Heaven! Growing up in Berkshire with Joe was an adventure, an honor and a privilege! Joe had a big, beautiful smile, a kind & loving heart & his laughter was infectious. He was never one to hold back on giving his opinion nor on providing unsolicited words of advice. I was never fond of having to walk the dog but always enjoyed it when Joe was either peddling along beside me on his bike or walking with me! I was fortunate to not only have grown up with Joe but to have been his friend! Joe's departure from this world is tragic and he left this world too early but I can promise you this .... he may be gone but he will never be forgotten! You are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Thinking very much of you, your family, and your friends today, Joe. So sorry that I could not make it back to St. Louis for your service. Joe always had a kind word for all when he saw them and about them when he would speak of them. Ironically, Joe became close to my mother, and consequently our family, because my mom would always pick him up when she saw him walking or drive him home from events when she would see him. We are very saddened by his passing and wish to offer the Auffenberg family our deepest condolences.

To the Auffenberg Family
So sorry for the loss of Joe. When Joe was in your presence, you couldn't help but have a smile of your face. He always made me laugh as we compared episodes of The Three Stooges and talk about Cardinal baseball.
You are in my prayers and will sadly missed.

To the Auffenberg Family,
My sympathies to the Auffenberg family. I am so sorry to hear of Joes' tragic death. Joe put a smile on my face every time I saw him. He would always say something that made you laugh. A gentle loving soul. My mom and I were sharing memories and he once told her “If you don't lose weight you will never find another husband, so you better get busy” It made us smile again. I am so lucky to live in Berkshire and be part of Joe's life. Thanks Joe for being such a great person. The Hogan's love you!!

Joe was without a doubt one of the most lovable people I have had the pleasure of knowing through life. He had an abundant heart and he shared his smile with friends and strangers alike.....You will be missed terribly and I can't even imagine special occasions and birthdays without a card from Joe. It was only a week ago that my Mother received his Valentines Day card (and she got his Christmas and Birthday cards too). You leave this world having made it a much better place, and for that we all thank you. Enjoy your heavenly reward....it is well deserved !!

I had the honorable pleasure of working with Joe at the Arc and also bring friends outside of work. He bowled with my Uncle, Daniel Liebig, and every Saturday when I went to watch the boys bowl, Joe put the biggest smile on my face. Joe was a predictable person in my life which brought me great comfort. I enjoyed coming into work every morning to see which plaid shirt Joe chose for the day and he would get so excited when he could buckle his belt a little tighter over time. He was a Hallmark person in my life and in many other's lives. Please know my family and I are praying and thinking of the family all the time and will see you Saturday.
