The Regular Worship Community at the NEW CATHEDRAL BASILICA
July 15, 2013
To the GUMMERSBACH FAMILY:
JOE set the pace for being an effective, welcoming church usher during his many years of service at the New Cathedral Basilica.
He was always "on the ball"--cordial, directive when required, and friendly.
And he even "pinch hit" more than a few times as an impromptu tour guide
for the scores of visitors that might show up(sometimes unannounced!) that might need a tour as well as a church usher.
JOE will truly be missed by all of us at the New Cathedral Basilica. We're having a Mass read for him in his honor there.
Rest in Peace, JOE, and know of our prayerful remembrance--and our deepest sympathy to all of you.

I am so sorry to learn about Joe's passing. He was one of the first officials to give me a warm welcome when I first moved to St. Louis from Columbia, MO. We had great times working basketball together and telling great stories... Most true, but certainly some made more entertaining by our imaginations.
Jim, you and your family are in my heart and prayers at this most difficult time.

We are Executive House condo owners in Joe and Janice's building... Although we only have been here 2 years and spoken to them occasionally, we know that they both are the nicest people that you would ever want to meet. Truly friendly and compassionate people. Our only regret is that we did have the honor to know Joe better... God bless... Dennis and Jackie Overton 17D

It was with great sadness that I learned of Joe's death. We were roomates at Holy Cross for 3 years. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. I regret that we did not have the chance to be together more in these later years. He will be missed but in my prayers always.

Joe was my dad's (Shep Smith) best friend since they first met as freshman at St. Louis University High. Joe was pleased to be initially taller than my dad who later grew to be 6'8" tall. They had a lot of fun on the basketball court over the years.
Our entire family will really miss Joe. He was so sincere and friendly. My dad was able to visit Joe several times during his final week in hospice. Joe was at peace and ready to go to heaven.
We extend our sympathy to his wonderful wife, Janice, and his nice brother, Jim.

Most sincere condolences to Joe's family, particularly Jim. Joe was a complete gentleman on and off the basketball court. I enjoyed his appreciation and respect for basketball while refereeing, and his genuine friendliness always.
