Barnett, Judith Harrison Judy Sailed to Far Shores: February 5, 2011. BORN: May 2, 1942 Clarinda, Iowa, especially proud of MANX heritage. Beloved wife for 46 years of Thomas P. Barnett; daughter of the late Leo D. and Kathryn (nee Watts) Harrison; dearest sister of David L. (Bonnie) Harrison, Richard L. Harrison, John H. Poole and Andrea Jean (Douglas) Gray; sister-in law of Mary Helen (Ronald) Travers, Mary Ann (Dennis) Nielsen, Genevieve Mickie (the late David) Northcutt and Kathleen Bridget (Michael) Piel; our dear aunt, great-aunt, niece, cousin, friend, and devoted representative of her constituents and the citizens of the City of Maryland Heights, Missouri. Judy was an early advocate and tireless worker for the successful incorporation in 1985 of the City, now one of the premier locations in Saint Louis County with many hardworking elected officials and professional staff responsive to the needs of the community.According to Mayor Mike Moeller: Judy was truly one of the founders of this city, and she worked tirelessly on behalf of our residents. She served at various times for 17 years on the City Council first on the original appointed Council then elected by a large majority. Judy was a champion of the cultural arts and advocated the now established outdoor concert series, chorus and the popular INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL. She was an active member of the Community Chorus, who will perform at 7 p.m. during visitation and again Monday at the Council Chambers. Judy worked as an advertising executive and freelance practitioner for over 20 years starting in an era when women did not have many opportunities to direct operations. She took great pride in helping start up companies get off the ground and become successful. She was a graduate of Webster Groves High School and Washington University, and was selected for St. Louis Women in Leadership. In 2010 she was honored for Community Service by the Daughters of the American Revolution. As a lifelong sailor and Skipper of her own boat, Judy was a fierce competitor winning many races and trophies at the local, regional and national level. As a founding member of Carlyle Sailing Association and promoter of the Y-Flyer Class Boat she recruited, trained and encouraged many new members for over 40 years, and will be missed by the sport. She was a recipient of the Y-Class Presidents award for service as a past president and as a Hall of Fame recognition for extraordinary service to the Class. Judy loved Japanese flower arranging and her fellow members of the Ikebana group in St. Louis, which promotes this ancient culture and provides prominent displays at the annual Japanese Festival at Shaw's Garden. She was proud to have been elevated to the CHOUDEN level by the Grand Master of IKEBONO/IKEBANA the oldest flower arranging society in Japan. She was honored to meet the Empress and Emperor of Japan when they visited St. Louis. Her inner compass always pointed to EXCELLENCE as the destination! Judy and her family are especially thankful to all the caring, wonderful nurses and doctors at the ST. JOHN'S MERCY HOSPITAL ICU; GOD BLESS YOU ICU and DOMO Ariagato Gozaimasu Dr. Yasumiro! Judy was a member of the MANX Family Association, Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, PEO, Carlyle Sailing Association, Y-Flyer Yacht Racing Association and Ikebana Japanese Flower Society and the Missouri Botanical Garden.
