Louis Werner Obituary

Louis Werner, a New York-based travel writer and documentary producer whose work explored the depth and diversity of global cultures, passed away on May 28. He was 70. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, he attended St. Louis Country Day School and Saint Paul's School and earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. He found his compass early through a fellowship at the American University in Cairo, which sparked a lifelong interest in the Arab world. He later earned graduate degrees from Johns Hopkins and Columbia. Louis loved Arabic, camels, basset hounds, Baroque opera, Elizabeth Bishop's poetry, paddleboarding, and the Catskills. He visited more than 70 countries, bringing overlooked stories into vivid focus. His travels brought him to Mount Ararat, the Pamir Mountains, Mauritania, Khartoum, and many other far-flung places. He wrote for AramcoWorld, Scientific American, Smithsonian Magazine, and Americas Magazine. Distinguished by its humanism and historical depth, his writing highlighted communities in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. Louis also produced documentaries. Twice, he joined Sudanese herders on a 40-day camel drive across the Sahara - a journey of shared endurance captured in "Voice of the Whip", his documentary for the BBC. He stayed in touch with the men in that film, and later their children, for the rest of his life. He also produced "A Sheepherder's Homecoming", which captured the life of a Mexican migrant worker in the Nevada desert, now in the permanent collection of MoMA. He is survived by his wife Elena; children Genevieve and Kennett; siblings Elise, Anne, and Peter; his aunt; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Lou Werner, whom I had the great pleasure of counting among my dearest friends for nearly 50 years, was a genuine "Renaissance man," and a fine and wonderful friend to many of the less fortunate.

After meeting in Arabic classes during our graduate school years
at the Johns Hopkins SAIS, we continued our friendship during our fellowship year in the CASA program at the American University of Cairo. Lou and I lived in the same apartment building, and often enjoyed long chats about our experiences there. We climbed Mt Sinai together with a group of "pilgrims" and toured the Sinai peninsula and East Jerusalem. Later, after our return to the US, we kept up our friendship over the years, and I got to know his lovely wife Elena, and celebrated with them the birth of their two children, my own marriages, and numerous other life events and accomplishments, much of which was revolved around our mutual love of Arabic and Middle Eastern culture. His memory, along with his many kindnesses and generosity, will live long in my heart.

Deepest condolences to Lou's family. We were classmates in the CASA program, and I will always remember Lou's amazing good humour and sense of adventure. Whether dealing with a collapsed lung or exploring Egypt, Lou had an unfailing equanimity and wry sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.

I came to know Lou when in Cairo on the fellowship program which so inspired him. Lou already exhibited the restless curiosity and enthusiasm for adventure which came to define him. I am glad he lived as full a life as he did and, though he left us too soon, he left behind a legacy of his passion for humanity. My deepest condolences to Elena and all Lou's family
