Lou Werner, whom I had the great pleasure of counting among my dearest friends for nearly 50 years, was a genuine "Renaissance man," and a fine and wonderful friend to many of the less fortunate.
After meeting in Arabic classes during our graduate school years
at the Johns Hopkins SAIS, we continued our friendship during our fellowship year in the CASA program at the American University of Cairo. Lou and I lived in the same apartment building, and often enjoyed long chats about our experiences there. We climbed Mt Sinai together with a group of "pilgrims" and toured the Sinai peninsula and East Jerusalem. Later, after our return to the US, we kept up our friendship over the years, and I got to know his lovely wife Elena, and celebrated with them the birth of their two children, my own marriages, and numerous other life events and accomplishments, much of which was revolved around our mutual love of Arabic and Middle Eastern culture. His memory, along with his many kindnesses and generosity, will live long in my heart.

Deepest condolences to Lou's family. We were classmates in the CASA program, and I will always remember Lou's amazing good humour and sense of adventure. Whether dealing with a collapsed lung or exploring Egypt, Lou had an unfailing equanimity and wry sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.

I came to know Lou when in Cairo on the fellowship program which so inspired him. Lou already exhibited the restless curiosity and enthusiasm for adventure which came to define him. I am glad he lived as full a life as he did and, though he left us too soon, he left behind a legacy of his passion for humanity. My deepest condolences to Elena and all Lou's family
