Here are just a few random memories of Mike.
Although he became very strong as he got older, when he was in grade school he was short and skinny, but he was still tough as nails. He played on St. Roch's football team when he was in 6th grade. I remember once when the Coach sent in this short skinny guy into the game to play against bigger and older players and the crowd cheered wildly for him. He was a popular guy (as were all the Gilmartins)
Another memory involves the scary letters I received from him when he was in Vietnam. He was often the point man and was in very dangerous situations, and I did not think he would live through the war, but somehow he found ways to survive.
Another memory is the sorrow he expressed when his sister Mary died. I can remember he was crying as he told me that Mary had sung "Leaving on a Jet Plane" to him before he left for Vietnam.
I remember about 25 years ago, I needed help tearing out and carryng bookcases that were ugly and heavy and which had been built in on my entire 3rd floor. Mike was delighted that someone had asked him for his help, and he arrived early in the morning and worked long and hard helping me.
Another memory involves the interesting stories he told me when he worked at the Muny. One time the stagehands played a softball game against Muny performers which included Robert Goulet and Mike clobbered a home run over Goulet's head.
I am very sorry to hear that he passed away, and I pray that he rests in peace.
