After 14 years, how timely it is to express wholehearted thanks to God for Phyllis, and His great array of blessings in Christ she was for you, Hank, and family as well as all of us during our
lives together in Taiwan.

Dear, dear Phyllis was a woman who loved her Lord, her family, Bible study, and teaching young children. She had friends and relatives in many places - in the U.S., Taiwan, U. K. and Hong Kong who loved her and were loved by her. I feel honored to be counted as one of them. Time spent with her was time of enjoyment. We talked about our children, our churches, our students, our struggles, and our hopes. Usually, we found something to laugh about - often a cute story of something one of our kids said or did.

Our paths crossed while living in Hong Kong and I knew Phyllis as a kind and caring person. My heart aches for you as you miss your life partner and great love. How wonderful that our grief is mitigated by knowing that we'll be with our loved ones again. May God's love embrace and comfort you . . .

Phyllis was a dear, dear lady. We have many wonderful memories of times together and with our kids in Taiwan - shopping for Easter dresses in Syi Men Ding for Gayle, Karin, and Kristin; play dates with all of our kids; Phyllis' electric scooter in Chiayi; a visit to Hong Kong when you lived there. One that stand out in my memory is a day when Phyllis drove to Tien Mou to see friends with the above-mentioned girls in the back seat(before seat belts and carseats). Karin opened the door and fell out of the car onto Chung Shan Road. That normally heavily traveled road was completely empty of cars behind us when I stepped out of the passenger seat fearing the worst! Phyllis pulled over to the side of the road and we prayed together a prayer of thanksgiving for saving that precious child.

A more recent memory is of Phyllis telling of her near-death experience after her first stroke. This time was the real thing, but we know she is with her Lord Jesus and was welcomed to heaven by many other saints.

Paraphrased from 2 Timothy 4:7-8
She has fought a good fight, she has finished her course, she has kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness ... not to her only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.

Sincere thoughts and prayers for you, from Kent, Mary, Scott and Jacqueline

Dear Dr. Henry Rowold and family,

May the Word of God be your comfort and hope at this difficult time,

"And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, 'Behold the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them and be their God . And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things have passed away.'"(Revelation 21:3-4)

We are looking forward to seeing her encouraging smile again on the new Heaven and new earth.

Dear Dr. Henry Rowold and family,

In our hearts, we vividly remember Mrs. Rowold's 30 years of service with Dr. Rowold as a loving and kind missionary in Taiwan and to Chinese people throughout the world. While we may only know a portion of her service to the Taiwanese people, surely our Lord knows the full extent of the love that she shared. We are looking forward to meeting her again in our Heavenly home.

Our Heavenly Father Himself comfort you and be with you all.

Rev. Richard Yi,
President of China Evangelical Lutheran Church (Taiwan)

PS. We are planning to have a moment of silence for Mrs. Rowold and your family at the CELC's general convention on Nov. 28, 2010.

Brother Hank...and Gayle and Jon and Sheryl...and all: How many times has the thought come, "What will it be like when a dear friend dies?" That question lingers also and especially for us in the great fellowship we have in Chevanurch. It's so bitter, not having Phyllis. It's so sweet knowing she lived and died in Christ. We're in Brazil visiting relatives and deeply regret not being able to come on Wednesday. If at home, we'd come. As an expression of our love and to hopefully help others, I wrote a prayer and am sending it through Diane. It helps us to speak with God at this time; may it help you. The worshippers at Lutheran Church of the Cross here in Porto Alegre prayed for you last night. Love, peace and joy.

Judy and I cherish the memories of our visits and rendezvous with the Rowalds in Hong Kong...especailly Phyllis and Judy spending time together while Warren, Dale Koehneke, and Hank made visits in Shanghai during the start-up years for Concordia International School Shanghai. Our Lord has blessed our lives with Phillis and her hospitality...we look forward to an eternity with her and all those who long for the appearing of the King of Kings, our Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed Christ the King Sunday, November 21, 2010.

Phyllis will always be remembered by us with joy and smiles. We enjoyed all our interactions with her, and appreciated her smile and sense of humor. From hosting seminarians and international students in your home, to jitterbugging at Oktoberfest, her zest of life and caring spirit shone for all to see. We are ever thankful to the Lord who redeemed that life that we will be able to see Phyllis again one day. The entire Rowald family and extended family remain in our prayers.

I can hear Phyllis' laugh as if it were yesterday. Her caring, upbeat and friendly spirit was evident to everyone she met. Phyllis was dedicated servant and witness to all. Karen and I were blessed by knowing Phyllis during our years together in Hong Kong. The angels rejoice as another servant joins their ranks in the presence of the King. Our warmest regards to Hank, Gayle, Sheryl, Jonathan and their families.

We were saddened to hear of Phyllis' sudden death this past week. We were aware she had a difficult life with the loss of sight due to another stroke. She was a real trooper, and the family was so loving in their care for her in these past five years. Our years of friendship in Taiwan and following have been " often apart but never separated". We will miss the easy smile of Phyllis and her warmth, love, and kind heart. Our deep sympathy to all of the family. We will keep you all in our prayers.

Phyllis personified the "Proverbs 31" woman. Our family (even before we were a family) benefited from and enjoyed her hospitality in Hong Kong and St. Louis. Fond memories of celebrating her birthday in San Jose.

A faithful servant is having her Sabbath rest. We pray for her family who will miss her greatly.

I feel blessed to have gotten to know Phyllis when she would visit Gayle and her family in San Jose California. I'm thankful for the time Phyllis would help me in my classroom at St. Timothy's Lutheran School. She had a special love for teaching and shared this during her visits. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I only met Hank and Phyllis (Sue) within the past 3 years, but what wonderful friends they've become. My fondest memory is of our drive in 2008 from St. Louis to Heits Point together, stopping for a picnic in wine country. it was on that trip that I discovered Phyllis' wry sense of humor and joy of living. I feel so fortunate to have known this sister in Christ, even just a bit. Sleep well, fine lady. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

November 21, 2010

I cherish the many years of friendship I shared with Phyllis. She was a special dear friend. She will be missed by all of her Chevanurch buddies, as well as all who have been blessed by knowing her. I continue to pray for Hank and the dear members of the family who will feel sad without her presence. Knowing that she is with the Lord is our great comfort. Love and peace, Claire Halamka
