Robert Shaheen Obituary

Shaheen, Bishop Robert J. 80, Bishop Emeritus of the Eparchy\1 of Our Lady of Lebanon, St. Louis, Missouri, died on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 in St. Louis, Missouri. Bishop Shaheen was born in Danbury, CT, to Albert and Aileen (Abdo) Shaheen. He attended St. Peter School and graduated from Danbury High School with the Class of 1955. He entered St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT in 1955 and in 1958 transferred to St. Basil Seminary in Methuen, Massachusetts, while attending classes at St. Anselm College in Goffstown, New Hampshire. Upon the founding of the Maronite Seminary at Washington, D.C., he became a seminarian at the Maronite Seminary. Bishop Shaheen was ordained a subdeacon on October 2, 1962 and deacon on June 7, 1963. He was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop Francis M. Zayek, Bishop of the Maronites of Brazil, on May 2, 1964, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception , Washington, D.C. on the occasion of the first Maronite Convention in the United States. Shortly after his ordination, Bishop Shaheen was named (19641965) an Associate of St. Anthony Church of Danbury; Administrator (1965-1966) St. Anthony Church, Springfield, Massachusetts where he purchased a six acre plot for a new Church. He returned to St. Anthony, Danbury, (1966-1967) as Administrator and subsequently as Administrator, St. Raymond Church (1967-1967) in St. Louis, MO and Pastor (1967-2000). St. Raymond's had been without a resident priest for over twenty years. Under his leadership, St. Raymond's went from just a few faithful parishioners using a four-family apartment to a cathedral with hundreds of active families. There Fr. Shaheen organized and celebrated Maronite liturgies on a regular basis. He also developed newsletters, bulletins, and fliers and conducted a census to identify Maronites in the greater St. Louis area. Introducing spiritual and cultural programs, religious education classes, he hosted a National Apostolate of Maronites (NAM) Convention in 1970. Kicking off a fund drive for a new church in 1971, Fr. Shaheen and his faithful dedicated a new church in November 1975, a new rectory in February 1977, and dedicated a new parish center, The Cedars, in November 1979. On March 31, 1986, Fr. Shaheen was ordained a Chorbishop by Archbishop Zayek. Fr. Shaheen purchased additional property and buildings for future development as a Maronite retirement center and cultural center in 1991, and again hosted the National Apostolate of Maronites Convention in 1995. On December 5, 2000 Bishop Shaheen was appointed second Bishop of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon by Pope John Paul II. He was ordained and enthroned as second Bishop of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon in St Louis, MO at the Basilica of St. Louis by His Eminence, Patriarch Nasrallah Peter Cardinal Sfeir. Bishop Shaheen was the first Maronite priest or bishop born in the United States. Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on July 10, 2013. Bishop Shaheen is survived by two brothers, William Shaheen and his wife Donna and John Shaheen and his wife Nancy; three nephews, David and his wife Theresa, Albert and Michael, a niece, Mary Elizabeth Kapp and her husband James, two grandnieces Aliya and Arya and many cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, Bishop Shaheen was predeceased by a brother, Richard Shaheen. Services: Visitation will be held at St. Raymond's Maronite Cathedral, 931 Lebanon Dr, 63104, on Wednesday August 16, 12 Noon until time of Funeral Mass at 7 pm. Interment, Monday August 21, in Danbury, CT. Masses or contributions to St. Raymond's Cathedral or Daughters of St. Paul greatly appreciated. My deepest condolences to the Shaheen family.

As a young alter boy, I was always proud to say I served at Father Bob's first mass in St. Anthony's. I followed his career from a distance. There were reports of his moving to the Los Angeles area, which I found exciting, but his calling seemed to be in St Louis.

Best prayers and wishes to the Shaheen family....

Michael

My deepest sympathy to the Shaheen Family for your loss.

I remember when I met the Bishop when he first came to St. Louis. I was very young and he was presiding over the funeral for my Uncle.

He was warm-hearted and compassionate. Through the years he has remained that
same person in every conversation I had with him. His friendship has been priceless to me and my family.

I was truly blessed to have spoken to
him on Wednesday, August 9th at the Hall. I thanked him for all he has done, but never thought it would be our last conversation.

God Bless You Bishop Shaheen and you will forever be in my heart.

Our deepest condolences on the loss of a great leader. Without Sayeedna's charisma and persistence, St. Raymond's would probably not have become the parish and cathedral that it is today. Thank you, Sayeedna Shaheen, for your years of service as a parish priest and as bishop. You will be forever remembered.

FRIENDS of PRIESTS of Greater St. Louis

August 15, 2017

The Officers and Members of FRIENDS of PRIESTS of Greater St. Louis offer their deepest prayerful sympathy to the Maronite Eparchies of North America, St. Raymond's Maronite Cathedral and the SHAHEEN Family on the passing of BISHOP ROBERT J. SHAHEEN, a legendary Maronite Catholic bishop, priest and community leader of our city here.

During Bishop Shaheen's many years of priestly ministry in metro St. Louis, he was pivotal in the systematic resurgence of St. Raymond's Maronite Parish (now the Maronite Cathedral) and the LaSalle Park neighborhood of the City of St. Louis, as well as many other Catholic and civic venues he left his stamp on with his dynamic faith, talents and vision.

While he was steadfast in his dedication to the Maronite Catholic faith and traditions, his clever, visionary and successful role as a dynamic religious and civic leader embracing many other Catholic venues and urban ethnicities will long be remembered by many St. Louisans of Catholic and other faiths and persuasions.

Bishop Shaheen's unique charisma, ideas and many friendships helped transform metro St. Louis at a very critical time in its history--and he was instrumental in helping to assure our city's urban rejuvenation with his prayer and hard work!

His sage advice to mayors, aldermen, civic and community leaders was also timely, gifted and appropriate on community, religious and urban issues--and was well received by many who later sought his counsel on those issues as well as spiritual matters.

May God Grant BISHOP SHAHEEN well-deserved Eternal Rest with Him in heaven--and the prayerful remembrance of the Catholic faith community of metro St. Louis (both Maronite and Latin Rite) for his dedication and service.

Sincerely,
Bernard Lewandowski, President
and the Officers and Members of
FRIENDS of PRIESTS of GREATER ST. LOUIS

Bishop Robert J. Shaheen well remain on earth in the love and memories of many thousands of people for many years to come. He was a great priest, a great bishop, a great man, and a great friend. He was extremely generous and kind, and uniquely hospitable. He welcomed everyone into his church, his home, and his heart. His many, many genuinely good accomplishments will benefit multitudes of people into the distant future. Bishop Bob was a living example of God's love, mercy, understanding and forgiveness. He had a deep and true devotion to Christ in the Holy Eucharist and the Divine Liturgy. His love and devotion to Our Blessed Mother was boundless. His service to God and his fellow human being was exemplary. May his good example inspire many men to service in the priesthood, and many men and women into deeper and more authentic experience and expression of Christian life.
To Billy & Donna and family, and John & Nancy and family, and all Bishop Bob's family members, I extend my deepest sympathy, but even more so, my sincere hope that you will be encouraged and fortified by the love that he always gave you, and by God's unending love for you.
Sincerely, your friend and former neighbor,
Ken Michael (Msgr.)

When he arrived St. Raymond's church was a four familyf flat and under his leadership became a major development in the LaSalle park area.
Years later under his quiet leadership the concept of public housing became a true example of economic integration. But, it all paled to how he effected the spiritual lives of people. A true example of a holy and faithful priest whose main objective was bringing people closer to God.
As he heads back to his hometown of Danbury Ct. for his burial we who know him take pride that he leaves this place better than when he arrived.
I'm afraid that we will never see his likes again.

The Dewan family, Chick and Nazira's children, Zea, Derek and Devry, send their thoughts and prayers to the Shaheen family. "Father Bob" and St. Anthony's was a huge part of our lives growing up in Danbury and our dad, Chick, was always very proud of him. The Maronite community is so blessed to have had a faithful and dedicated leader for so many years. And we are so honored to have known him. May Bishop Shaheen Rest In Peace.

To The Shaheen Family:
Bob and I received our appointments to the seminary on the same day. A terrific person of whom I wrote in the News-Times, following his ordination as bishop: "He is like a tree that is planted near flowing water, yielding its fruit in due season; his leaves never fading; success attends all that he does." It still does so! Bob was/is a holy and wholesome person. Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us.
Blessings and peace,
(Fr.) Leo McIlrath and Family

My deepest condolences to Most Rev. Robert Shaheen family. In Grammar School, he was Bobby, such a caring guy, and a great help to me in my challenge in learning my assignments, those "quizes" he helped me so many times, so sad to see my friends pass, but Bobby, you are in a great place up there, hopefully some day I can join you.
