Steve Sapp Obituary

Sapp, Steve

passed away on July 2, 2023 after a 9 month battle with esophageal cancer. He was a loving husband to Mary (Hellwege) and Father to Julie Mooney (Miles), Samantha Siegel (Brad) and Ryan Sapp (Amber). He is survived by his parents Larry and Karol Sapp and his brother Kevin Sapp. Steve was a wonderful grandfather to his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Jackson (24), Lily (22), Mason (21), Riley (17), Piper (16), Bailey (16), Leighton (14), Finley (11), Greyson (9), Avery (7), Brady (4) and Sofia (2).

Steve was a great guy who loved his family and was a friend to all. He loved coaching, reffing, grilling, gardening, and being outside. He loved the beach, country music and having a great time with his family and friends. Steve will be remembered by many athletes and coaches in the St. Louis area for his love of the game of basketball. Many of his players today credit him for the no excuses, hard work mental toughness he instilled in them. He taught many important life lessons to his players for which they are grateful for today. He was a winner!

A visitation and memorial service are set up for Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Geyer Road Baptist Church in Kirkwood. 4:00-6:00 p.m. visitation and 6:00-6:30 p.m. memorial service.

Sapper was always a gamer, football, basketball, and baseball. The starting QB, shortstop, and point guard always the star position. For a skinny looking kid he excelled at all sports, but he also was a great team mate, always being there even for a small kid like me when he threw my first and only touchdown pass, the first to come up and hug me and celebrate. A friend more than an athlete to all who knew him! RIP Sapper

Only saw this recently, but could not let it pass without adding a word.

On the field Steve gave it all he had, and he expected others to do the same. He exuded confidence, and that radiated to others and raised their level of play. When he called the play, and I saw the look in his eyes, I believed the play was going to work. Focus, execute, do your job. That was what he was going to do, and he expected it of others. I can´t remember another teammate that had that effect on me, and I´m guessing on others too. Thank you Steve.
May perpetual light shine upon him.

This popped up today. I still live next to the ball field at Watson School The church that now owns the property runs a summer camp and the kids laughing and yelling all day reminds me of the days when Steve & Kevin would be out there with us playing softball at Watson's summer rec program. Fond memories of a great guy. Rest in peace, Steve.

Sending our condolences to Steve´s family. I will always remember Steve as a great guy and great athlete-he could really throw a football. I´ll think back to all the fun we had in school. You will be missed.

Knew Steve from sports. I played JFL and though not on the same team got to know him through friends of his that played on the team I played on. Steve was a very good athlete and person. We did eventually play together on a Jr. Basketball team. Steve was always a leader. Competed against each other on the HS level in both football and baseball. Steve will surely be missed for all the good things he did for sports and kids that he taught to be not only good athletes but also good Adults.

I played football with Steve all 4 years of high school. He was the quarterback I was the center, so we had a close relationship :-). Always loved his competitivness and wicked sense of humor. He will be missed. The entire family is in our thoughts and prayers during this sad time.

Steve was a great and caring man. He collected so many donations for AFAF, that brought in a lot of money for the foundation. We will miss your generous spirit. RIP

Steve was a one of a kind! We played Khoury League ball together (With his dad, Larry's coaching) and summer softball at Watson School. I've still got a copy of the lineup card from his Khoury League no hitter when we were 14 yrs old. I lost my brother to esophageal cancer as well. My prayers go out to his whole family.

My husband Chuck Simpson and Steve were true birthday buddies and Chuck was very proud to share his exact birthday with his great friend Steve. I met Steve through Chuck and we became instant friends because of our love for sports and especially basketball. Always talking during March Madness and sharing our brackets. We will miss seeing Steve in Florida and talking sports. We will forever have a birthday toast in his honor. Our only happy thought is that Steve is finally with the love of his life again. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his children and grandchildren.
