I am late seeing this obit, Ted hired me to sell his Christmas trees when I was between jobs while attending UMSL. If only all employers were as gracious as he was to me, a skinny college student.
Our lives crossed in another way. His son in law, Kirk Verseman, is my 2nd cousin. Kirk´s Mom and my Mom were niece and aunt but were best of family friends, almost sisters.
My sincerest sympathies to one of the great ones!

After a Cleveland HS football game in about 1962 Mr Drewes politely and firmly requested my car of boisterousness, complete with air horn, move on so his Grand Avenue neighbors could get some quiet. It was a class act that furthered our education.

I enjoyed being a "carhop" at Ted Drewes. I worked for Ted senior who was always irritated by the boys who would rough up his gravel parking lot with their car tires. I had more fun meeting lots of boys! I did meet Ted Jr. also.

It´s never easy to have to say the final goodbye to a cherished friend or loved one no matter how much time we get with them. Thinking of all those friends and loved ones who are sorting through their memories of Ted and hoping everyone can find comfort in those memories. I know many of my own happy memories involved Ted Drewes Frozen Custard; what a legacy Ted leaves behind, professionally and personally. All the best to Ted and his family.

I remember Ted working on concretes with long, long lines at almost every window. Although I cannot have concretes anymore, he was present every time and he was always quick with a hello. Ted Drewes will be missed.

Condolences from my family to yours. One night several of us nurses went to go get Ted Drew´s after our shift. I had never tasted it at the time but my daughter is now 43 and I´m pretty sure they know me by sight because I´ve been going ever since. I always get the same thing and still do. One of the women said "You´ve been coming here a long time" and I said yeah about 40 years. I always got the same thing. A chocolate concrete with extra chocolate. Thank you for being there and prayers to your family.

I cherished my friendship with Ted. I spent many years doing his ads in the suburban journal, my favorite was the kids coloring contest. The only time he was peeved at me was when I bought his leaf dump and put a house on it. But that led to many evenings of great conversations about sports and Cardinal Baseball. He had a great perspective. He was very philanthropic, sponsoring the back cover of the Moolah Shiners Circus Program book for over 40 years. But best of all, he was my friend, and I´ll cherish that forever.

I grew up across the street from the south grand store. Moved there in 1954. When Ted Jr. Took over the business he had a vision of what he wanted the business to be. That vision was to be the best custard stand ever. He refused to compromise quality. He turned down many offers to expand his business but it would no longer be his family´s business. Next to Stan Musial he was probably our most recognizable St.Louisian.
Ted thanks for all you have done to promote a positive image of our city though your delicious custard. Also you developed and made the concrete world famous. Finally you have left Ted Drewes frozen custard in good hands. Your son in law Travis and his children are making sure Ted Drewes Frozen Custard will be here for many years to come.
We need to get your statue going and put it under the arch.
Thanks for everything Ted.

As a child, I viewed Ted Drewes as a wonderful uncle. I grew up two blocks away from his custard stand on Chippewa and ended up spending much time there. Ted was always kind and generous to the neighborhood kids. On your birthday, you could go up to the stand and tell Ted it was your special day, and he would say something like, "Oh, really. Now let me see," and he would get out his big book of birthdays and find your name on the page for that date. Then he would grandly present you with a thick milkshake/malt for free. As time went on, the birthday book was abandoned for the report card incentive. All you had to do was bring your report card to Ted and he would look it over, snip off the corner of it, and hand you a free milkshake. Sometimes, he commented on what a great job you did in school.
Because we lived so close, my brothers ended up working for Ted, picking up trash that may have been left behind by his customers. He wanted to keep things clean in the neighborhood and paid young people to help him do that.
My mom also visited Ted Drewes stand every year, a couple days before Christmas to get our tree. Being so close to the holiday, there were slim pickin's, but whatever Mom brought home, we transformed into a beautifully decorated evergreen. Ted had a presence in our lives all year round.
Thanks, Ted, for being a wonderful example of kindness, generosity, and goodness in my life. You will be missed.

So many nites at Ted Drews during teenager just starting-they had car hops back then!! Also had a Kiddie Sundae for 15 cents, he was always so welcoming and even knew some of us by name...not sure if that was a good or a bad thing my family and my kids and this newest generation still have a passion for your frozen custard cuz it was the best! Rest in piece Ted and Dottie-you deserve it and we´ll always remember

You have my condolences. My mother´s cousin was Ruth Quigley. Ted would come to gatherings with frozen custard. Once he brought `The Fox´ for us to taste test ( named for Mary Strauss.)
So happy for the legacy he created.

Ted communicated mostly with smiles as my Mari de Villa neighbor. He was already in heaven holding Dotty's hand.
