Young, Thomas Leo
age 88, passed on Thursday, August 1, 2024. He was born in St Louis, MO on June 30, 1936, to Harold and Edna Young (nee Orf). Thomas married Sherry Rose Young (nee Doyle) on January 30, 1960 at St. Dismas church in Florissant Missouri.
He had three children: Wendy Marie (Tim) Adrian, Barry Thomas (Sue Rabbitt) Young and Brenda Kay (Greg) Knudtson, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Tom enjoyed painting. golf with his friends, children and grandchildren, traveling with his wife to exotic locations. In his earlier years, he enjoyed sailing his 14-foot sailboat the USS Drag-bottom. He started camping with his wife and three children in 1968, visiting many States and National Parks. Tom's sense of adventure and traveling was definitely passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Tom Graduated from Kendrick Seminary and landed a job at McDonnell Douglas, where he worked in the computer department drawing flow diagrams. He taught himself computer programming and in 1966, was hired as the first staff member of the IT department at the Saint Louis Post Dispatch. While there, Tom Installed the first computer systems and oversaw the design of computer systems to convert the financial, advertising and circulation operations from 1966 to 1971. In later years, Tom helped to automate the typesetting process, the most labor intensive process at the paper. He was constantly improving the IT architecture until the early 1980's. Tom worked at the Post Dispatch from 1966 - 1999.
He was preceded in death by his Wife, Sherry Rose Young; his father, Harold Martin Young; his mother, Edna Elizabeth Young; his brother-in-law, William Hays; sister-in-law, Georgia Young.
Services: Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16, 2024 at Newcomer Funeral Home in St Peters. Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Dardenne Prairie, MO. www.newcomerstlouis.com

I worked with Tom at the Post many years ago. I was happy to have called Tom a friend. He will be missed.

We met Tom & Sherry when they moved to LSL. We enjoyed their friendship and all the happy moments on the lake and going to Stages together. May he rest in peace with Sherry. Richard & Maureen Owens
