West Des Moines - Elizabeth "Liz" Bernice Abathan, 37, of West Des Moines, formerly of Roland, passed away January 4, 2021 at her home in West Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Liz was born on December 13, 1983 in Bandung, Indonesia to Bohlen and Joy (Hermanson) Thye. She graduated from Roland-Story High School in 2002 and DMACC in 2004. Liz worked as an administrative assistant and representative in the insurance and banking industry.
Liz enjoyed walking in nature, writing poems and letters, reading & listening to music, watching vintage movies & shows, exploring the Des Moines area, and chilling with family and friends. She attended Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, The Church of Pentecost - PIWC in Des Moines and was passionate about social justice; she was someone who wouldn't stay silent when she saw other's mistreated and whose sharp, wry humor made so many of us laugh daily. She is irreplaceable.
Liz is survived by her mother, Joy Thye of Roland; three sisters: Christine Thye of Omaha, NE; Angela (Mike) Sansone of Mentor, OH; and Michelle Thye of West Des Moines and her ex-husband, Kossi Abathan of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her father, Bohlen Thye.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Hebron Baptist Church at 1338 9th St, Des Moines, IA 50314 or the Food Bank of Central Iowa 2220 E. 17th St. Des Moines, IA 50316.
