He was my first CO and a great leader in NMCB 133 1984. I´ll never forget how he came to our project at White Beach Okinawa. I was one of the most junior men out there but he sat and spoke to me as if I were as important as anyone else on the job. He told me how everyone brings unique experience and skill no matter how junior they are and that was a leadership lesson I carry with me still today. Through the years I have often thought of the leadership lessons I learned from Captain Kannegieser and was thankful my career started under his command.

Captain Kannegieser was my first CO in the Navy. I was a green Navy Chaplain with 2 months in the Navy when I reported to NMCB-133 in February, 1984. From the very first time I met him, he had my full respect. He and his wife, Evelyn, were both faithful Christians, which made my adjustment a lot easier. I remember him telling me in that first meeting, "Ken, if you are here to be a Chaplain, then I welcome you aboard." He was my CO for the next 19 months or so. He led the Kangroo Battalion with Strength, Integrity and Class and I was more than privileged to serve under his command. My wife, Connie, and I send our prayers and loving thoughts to his wife, Lucille, his children and grandchildren and all the Kannegeiser family. You have every reason to be proud of this Great Man.
