George P. Smith
January 12, 1935 - August 22, 2021
Wiggins, Mississippi - George P. Smith, age 86, of Wiggins, Mississippi, passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, August 22, 2021.
George was born January 12, 1935 in Gulfport, Mississippi, to the late Hubert and Mildred Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Carol Smith; his parents, Hurbert and Mildred Smith; son, Mark Smith and brother, Larry Smith.
George was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to everyone. He attended Gulfport High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wiggins.
George enlisted in the US Navy in 1952 and served in Guam during the Korean War. Upon his return he graduated from Perkinston College "MGCCC" and William Carey in Gulfport. His entire life was dedicated to public service. George served as Gulfport motorcycle police, Alcoholic Beverage Control Agent, Assistant Sheriff of Harrison County, State Senator, Harrison County Youth Court Administrator, Tourism Director for Harrison County and Tourism Director for the state of MS. George retired from the Mississippi Department of Transportation in 2015 and then served as Alderman in Wiggins, MS. He also served as a board member for the Pat Harrison Waterway District. He loved playing all sports. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved Ole Miss football. He lived a full life and lived it his way.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Allen (Joey), Julia Threadgill (Ricky), son Brian Cain (Chris), daughter-in-law Angie Smith, brother Richard Smith, grandchildren, Lauren Parker (Jonathan), Scarlett Bellot, Meghan Smith, Porter Smith, Carson Thrash (Taylor), Keith Cain, Connor Cain, Marissa Allen and Whitney Threadgill. He has 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to One Magnolia Place in Gulfport and Lucinda Sellers for caring for our dad.
Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 27, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Wiggins with burial to follow in Wiggins City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 am.- until service Friday, August 27, 2021 at the church.
Moore Funeral Service in Wiggins is in charge of the arrangements.

George Smith was a dedicated Mississippi tourism advocate and leader. He helped my family make our first visit to our state. Later, he was an early mentor when I came to the Coast to work in tourism here myself. His wisdom, enthusiasm, and friendship will never be forgotten.
