Norman Duplain Obituary

Norman Duplain had an impressive resumé.

The Biloxi resident is best remembered for an 85-yard kickoff return in honor of his daughter's birth when he played at Mississippi State during the 1950s.

Duplain, 80, died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. His funeral is Friday at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Biloxi.

Several weeks after the birth of his daughter, Mary Love, in 1951, Duplain landed his greatest collegiate accomplishment. His then-wife was unable to attend the Bulldogs' contest against Tulane. She had just given birth to Mary Love Duplain Wynne, who now lives in Alexandria, Va.

"My mother couldn't attend the game because she just gave birth to me," Wynne said. "My mother sent a message to the fieldhouse: 'Make one for Mary Love.' My father made me a star when I was born."

Duplain also was an outstanding golfer whose amateur tournament championships included the Yugoslavian Invitational in Biloxi and the Gold Medal Classic in Las Vegas.

"My father was a super athlete and I'm so proud of him," Wynne said. "He never met a stranger and would strike up a conversation. He loved entertaining people and always invited them over for dinner. He knew people everywhere we went."

Duplain also earned acclaim outside the sports world. After several years living in Belzoni, Duplain returned in the 1970s to Biloxi, where he owned and operated Hugo's Restaurant. He was also instrumental in bringing gaming to the Coast, and served as executive host for the President Casino during the 1990s.

Duplain lettered four years in football, basketball and track and was named best "Best Boy Athlete" at Biloxi. An All–Big Eight running back, Duplain also set a state record and won the state championship in the 440-yard dash.

He was later inducted into the Biloxi Sports Hall of Fame.

Dear Family of Norman,
It has been many years since I met Norman but I will never forget him. I was 19 years old and went to work for Norman at Hugo's. His Mother worked with him every day. He always had a smile on his face. Helped you in all situations and was just the most loyal of friends. May your grief be short but your sweet memories of him last always.

Norman was a very good friend to my family for many years. When my mom Ginny Moran Poulos had her stroke he would cook meals and send them over, he was a wonderful cook. He will be greatly missed. I pray for the families loss as well as his dear friends, my mom and pop included. I love you Norman!

I knew Norman only a short time by playing golf at Sunkist. I am from Starkville and of course an avid MSU fan. We had some long conversations about the football team. Norman was an outgoing individual and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Joe Williams:
Thoughts and Prayers to you all.I am one of those people Norman has touched with his sports conections.I met him on the golf course in 1982 and after sharing my Pro Football ambitions as a FG
Kicker,Norman told me to call the Los Angelos Rams on Monday and they would take a look at me.
Not knowing him at that time I doubted
him, but sure enough on that Monday, the Rams expected my call and invited me to LA for a tryout and next thing I know I was on the way to training camp.
I will always be greatfull for God to put me in the same place & time with Norman on that day. GOD IS GREAT
