Sue Jones McClamroch passed away at the age of 98, surrounded by family in Madison, Alabama. The oldest daughter of Govan Clinton Jones and Madge Kathleen Loyd Jones was born October 30, 1925, in Florence, Alabama. She was named Hylda Sue Jones but known as Sue.
Sue attended and graduated from public schools in Gadsden, Alabama. She graduated from the Alabama College for Women (now University of Montevallo) and completed her Masters of Science in Social Work degree at the University of Tennessee.
From working with service persons, veterans, and families in both WWII and the Korean War and veterans treated at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, to serving as a counselor with the Florence Crittenton Home program in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as family counseling services in Atlanta and Mobile, Alabama, and implementing mental health services on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, she was proud of initiating Region 13 and 14 mental health programs in Mississippi. Sue served as executive director of Singing River Mental Health Services in Pascagoula, Mississippi from July 1972, until her retirement in September 1989. In 1983, she helped initiate Singing River Facilities Foundation to facilitate appropriate housing options for the varied mental health programs. For several years in retirement, Sue served as on-call social worker for Kare In Home Health on the Mississippi Coast.
Honored as Professional Woman of the Year by the Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Business and Professional Women in 1971, Sue was a nominee for Jackson County Citizen of the Year in 1972 and was chosen as Social Worker of the Year in 1973 by the local chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Over the years, her volunteer activities included: Sunday School teacher for preteens, adult Sunday School class co-leader, Deacon, church session member, and member of the Helping Hands Committee, as well as active in a women's circle, all at First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Active with the Ocean Springs Church Women Association, Sue enjoyed the affiliation with church women throughout the city. For several years she hosted the annual sewing group that made clothing protectors for nursing home patients. Sue was a long-time member and officer of the Friends of the St. Martin Public Library. She served on the board of directors for the Bacot Home for Youth and for the Mental Health Volunteers who held an annual gift drive for patients housed at the state's two long-term mental health hospitals. Active in the Windsor Park Civic Association, Sue served on the Yard of the Month committee, covering the Woodville Heights subdivision.
Widow of the late Waldo Cornelius McClamroch, Sr., her sister, Sara J. Denson also predeceased Sue. She is survived by daughter Dr. Susan L. McClamroch of Madison, AL, and son W. C. Neil McClamroch, Jr. (Cindy) of Richardson, TX; plus two granddaughters, April S. (Jondavid) Black and Olivia J. (Michael) Chilton; three great grandsons, Brandon M. Seoane, Connor G. Black (Megan), Spencer L. Black, and great granddaughter Paige L. Chilton, all of Madison, AL; one nephew, Dr. Dee R. (Leigh) Denson, three great nephews Joe L. (Julia) Denson, Dr. Douglas A. (Dr. Lauren) Denson, and Charles D. (Lura) Denson, all of Birmingham, AL.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs.
