Willine Pitt Mohar
August 25, 2025
Gautier, Mississippi - Willine Pitt Mohar of Gautier, MS, and formerly of Scott, LA, passed away on August 25, 2025, in her beloved home, which she built with her husband in 1969 shortly before Hurricane Camille. A strong-willed woman, she fought a long, hard battle with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) for nearly 20 years.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Harold Mohar; her parents, Paul Pitt and Hazel Broussard Pitt; her fraternal twin brother, Paul Neil Pitt, Sr., and twin brothers, Anthony Ronald Pitt and Donald Joseph Pitt.
Survivors include her daughter, Angela Mohar Moreton (Frederick) and three granddaughters, Alexandra Camille, Madeleine Elise, and Adeline Ella Moreton, all of Ocean Springs, MS; goddaughters and nieces, Denise Pitt and Doy Pitt Prejean of Lafayette, LA; nieces, Melissa Pitt Babineaux of Lafayette, LA; Michelle Pitt and Donna Pitt Swisher of Euless, TX; and Joan Pitt Heiss of Greensboro, NC; and nephews, Blaine Anthony Pitt and Paul Neil Pitt, Jr. of Lafayette, LA.
As a true Cajun growing up in the 1930s and 40s, Willine spoke French before learning English in elementary school, where students would be reprimanded - with a ruler tapped on their knuckles - for speaking French. She graduated from Scott High School in 1955. She earned her Bachelor of Education degree from Southwest Technical Institute (STI), which later became the University of Southwest Louisiana (USL) and is now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL).
Willine taught school for five decades, from the late 1950s through the 1990s, beginning her teaching career at St. Genevieve in Lafayette, LA. She went on to teach at Central, South, and Jackson Elementary Schools in Pascagoula, MS, as well as at Sacred Heart in Pineville, LA, and at St. Rita and Alexandria Country Day in Alexandria, LA, which she often referred to as her favorite teaching position.
She was affectionately known as Non to her three brothers and parents; Nonnie to her three granddaughters; and Nanny to her two goddaughters.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, she was a devout Catholic who lived her faith through her actions and interactions with others. She had a warm and friendly personality, and she genuinely took an interest in others. She was easily loved by those she came into contact with - from the mail ladies to the waitstaff at her favorite restaurants.
She loved the holidays and enjoyed decorating her home and dressing up for these occasions, including festive jewelry and matching nail polish. She enjoyed playing the piano, people watching, reading, dining out, and cooking at home. She was also an avid writer of handwritten letters, a solver of jigsaw puzzles, and an enthusiast of word searches. She enjoyed taking long walks and sharing laughter with friends and family. She was a wonderful mother who instilled in her only child, Angela, the Catholic faith and a strong sense of empathy, courage, and tenacity.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 am in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Scott, LA. The Reverend Steven LeBlanc served as the Celebrant.
Lectors were Melissa Pitt Babineaux and Adeline Moreton. Giftbearers were Willine's three granddaughters, Allie, Maddie, and Adeline Moreton.
Pallbearers were Paul Neil Pitt, Denise Pitt, Melissa Pitt Babineaux, Brett Landry, Jarred Landry, and Charles Stemmans. Honorary Pallbearers are nephews, Blaine Pitt and Jonathon Guidry.
Special thanks to Dr. Mahmoud Zayed, Nurse Practitioner Jeri Farmer, Dr. Ijlal Babar and the staff at Singing River and Ocean Springs Hospital. Their excellent care allowed Willine to be with us for 20 years after her diagnosis.
Should friends desire, the memorial donations be made to Volunteers of America New Orleans / Southeast Louisiana Chapter.
