Laura Lothe Obituary

DEFOREST, WI - Laura "Jean" Lothe, age 91, of DeForest, passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Parkside Assisted Living. She was born on April 27, 1933, in Madison, the daughter of Arthur and Eunice (Creed) Slotten.

Jean grew up on the east side of Madison and graduated from Sun Prairie High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Romaine Lothe on Oct. 27, 1951, at East Side English Lutheran Church. She was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Burke Lutheran Church until her passing.

Jean had a strong love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always helping care for her grandchildren, an activity she adored. In their retirement years, Jean and Romaine traveled a lot, their favorite destinations being Arizona and Branson.

Jean's favorite color was yellow, so it was no surprise that she always planted an abundance of marigolds and petunias to brighten her yard. In addition to flower gardening, she loved vegetable gardening and canning the produce she grew. She also loved to bake and cook, and always made sure her family and friends were well fed. She will be fondly remembered for her amazing pies, banana bread, lefse and applesauce. Her loved ones were always sent home with a loaf of her prized banana bread, or jar of applesauce.

Jean will be missed by her sons, Rodney (Denise) Lothe, Daniel (Sandy) Lothe and Timothy (Laurie Barton) Lothe; daughters, Jeannine (Ed) Lauersdorf and Amy Jo (Tim) Mueller; brother, Donald (Shirley) Slotten; and 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Eunice; husband, Romaine on Oct. 2, 2010; infant son, David Lothe; brother, Forrest (Elaine) Slotten; sister-in-law, Rebecca (Irving) Kittleson; and great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Poole and Faith Mueller.

Jean loved and cherished her high school friends and the friends she met throughout her life. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to all of the staff at Parkside Assisted Living as well as the Brighton Hospice team for the wonderful care they provided.

A memorial service will be held at BURKE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5720 Portage Road, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024. Burial will be held at Burke Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Condolences from the Schiller family of 146 Flint Street so many years ago. My mom and Jeannie would have coffee together, My younger siblings played and attended school with all of the Lothe children. I was babysitter for Don & Shirley Slotten, just down the street. I married and left the neighborhood in 1967 but, I will never forget the wonderful memories of being part of that neighborhood. Until I read this obit, I did not know her first name was Laura, I knew her name as Jean, but she was always Mrs. Lothe.
Always and forever Flint Street friends.
