To all of Judge Kaplan's Family and Friends,
Although I did not personally know Judge Kaplan, he had quite a lasting impression on the legal and service community in Broward County. I am a City Commissioner and the chair of a local political party and the lawyers and committee members that I come in contact with always had great things to say about The Judge. I know that the community, the court system and most importantly, his family and wide circle of friends will miss him.
My sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers go out to you.
Warmest thoughts,

To all of Charlie's family and friends,
I know that I speak for all of us in the legal community that Charlie's tragic and sudden death has touched us all. We will miss his broad smile and wonderful and optomistic outlook on life. Charlie was not concerned about his ego or receiving praise and recognition. His interest and concern was in doing the very best for the community he so ablily served. He was a judge who truly cared for those children who appeared in his court. He truly wanted most of all to make a difference in their lives. I know for a fact that Charlie positively impacted on the lives of many of the kids who had the good fortune to have their cases land in his court. This is true even though his time devoted to this pursuit was cut tragically short. This trait of caring and taking the time to let the kids know he cared, above all, was what we will remember when we think about Charlie the judge.
As far as Charlie the "mench" I am certain that we can all relate our own memories of this characteristic. He was caring and would go out of his way to do the right thing---consequences not withstanding. He was a tenatious litigator whom we all admired. He was both an honest and hard working defense lawyer and earlier, an ethical advocate for the prosecution. In short, he did his job and did it well.
Just last week, Charlie confided that he found a special joy of having the luxury to spend more time with his children whom he loved and cherrished with all his heart. He often spoke of how he worshiped his kids and relished the time that he could spend with them.
Charlie, we will miss you dearly and will think of you warmly always.
With love and sympathy,

What a terrible loss for all of us!
I had the honor of knowing Charlie personally as a lawyer and, after he was elected, appearing before him in juvenile court.
Charlie was a superb attorney and a passionate and caring judge.
His knowledge of the law and intolerance for nonsense were unmatched, and his unfailing humor helped all those whom he represented over the years and those who appeared before him as judge make their ways through the difficult and often confusing and painful criminal justice system.
His larger than life personality filled any room he was in, but never suffocated-- instead he brought brightness, life and laughter wherever he went.
Our entire community is lesser for his passing. My deepest sympathies to his family-- please know that Charlie will be long remembered and deeply missed.
Sincerely,

Words cannot express how deeply saddened I am at the loss of such a good man. He was not only a great attorney and friend but truly loved his family and life. Charlie lit up a room when he entered it by his laugh, and smile. He enjoyed being with people and wanted to help all people with his work as a lawyer and especially as a Judge. He did help many people in his career.
The love felt for Charlie will remain in our hearts as he touched so many with his infectious laugh, smile and love for life.

Dear Zachary,Ben, Emily, Daniel, Sylvia, Laura, Mona and Jodi,
We continue to walk around in a fog and complete shock, wishing it were just a bad dream. As BIlly Joel wrote, " Only the good die young". It just doesn't make sense. It seems so ironically unjust for a wonderful man who worked so hard and unselfishly at dispensing justice to die so young. Charlie (Daddy) was a special man. He had strength and tenacity, a big heart, was hysterically funny, full of integrity and was a great son, brother and father. I am most grateful that with all of the roles he played, he was my friend. I just cannot believe I will never be duped by him (again) with one of his crazy comments followed by that deadpan, serious face, followed by that classic laugh once he saw that he hooked you in to his prank. That laugh is eternally etched in my mind. I will miss that laugh and will now enjoy it from Zachary who genetically picked it up.
While anything that I might say can only be of limited comfort to you now, I pray for you all that God gives you the strength you need to get through this unimaginably difficult time in your lives. Christine, Matthew, Isabella and I are committed to being there for all of you in ANY way we can. To the greatest extent possible, let's all Celebrate Charlie's Life and his admirable acheivments. That is what Charlie would want. Lets try to find some time in between our tears to enjoy some great and funny stories about Charlie/Daddy. You all should be very proud of Charlie (Daddy). Zachary, Ben and Emily, take all the wonderful principles/lessons that your great father instilled in you and showed you through his actions (not talk) and make him proud! Don't walk, run with that torch you are carrying! He is within each of you and will be there looking over you every day and every minute. We hope you all garner some strength by knowing that you have a warm, supportive family that will be constantly surrounding you and sharing the love we have for each of you. We pray that for every tear you shed, there is 10 smiles and 12 laughs thinking about your wonderful Daddy/Son/Brother/friend. As we all try and deal with our terrible loss going forward, there will be some good moments which will allow you to think of happy memories and then it will change to tearful/weaker/sad moments and back again. Please know, that what will NEVER change is the love and support you have and will continue to have from your family.
We love you and are here for you.

Dr. and Mrs. Kaplan, Zach, Emily and Ben,
Words will never be enough to express my heartfelt sorrow. Everyone will miss Charlie.
Many seek the crown, but no one will ever surpass
him...his humor, his compassion, his sincere desire to achieve Justice for those wronged, and fair payment for those who did wrong.
Charlie , You are "The True Prince of Prince's"!
You set the bar higher, so few will ever be able to reach.
Many have known you longer, many have known you better, but I will always be proud to know that I was the one you picked to watch your back.
Thank You...for the True Honor! You are gone but it is not ended because we will meet again in Jersey, then we'll laugh and joke forever!!!
See You My Friend, Safe Journey, Peaceful Travels!!!

I worked for Charlie as his legal assistant for years before he took the bench in 2006. We moved to the courthouse together, excited and full of hope. He wanted to make a difference and felt he had found his place in the juvenile division. He was passionate about everything he did... His work, his play, and most importantly, his children.
To Ben, Emily and Zach, I can tell you that a day did not go by that he did not mention your names. The sun rose and set on you, for you were the center of his universe.
To Dr. and Mrs. Kaplan, you could not have raised a finer son.
Charlie, you big goof. How am I ever going to work in the legal community without you? I wish I had of hugged you more. I wish I had of told you that I loved you.
I'm going to miss you my friend, my buddy, my boss, my confidant.
Rest in peace.

A few months ago, I had the good fortune of having Judge Kaplan preside over my case in juvenile court which involved a crime that I unfortunately committed. Each time I had a hearing in his courtroom I was treated with fairness and compassion. He has impacted my life in such a positive way. His decisions in my life have taken me off the wrong path in life.
Based on my experience with Judge Kaplan, I could tell he was a kindhearted and righteous person. It is very disheartening to see a great man that wanted to make a difference in our courts leave us. I was shocked when I heard the news from my local newspaper. It is my hope that the next person to take Judge Kaplan's position will be as just and compassionate as he was. At my last hearing after having Judge Kaplan say that he expected good things from me his last words to me were "Don't disappoint me" he then released me from my program to my family. Charlie Kaplan will always be in my memory as a man who helped change my life.
God Bless,

Dear Friends in the Broward Legal Community,
Although Charlie left this world far too early he had found his dream job and had become the father of three dream children. The job was important to him but he lived his life to be with these precious kids.
Whenever I found myself at a Tobin family event or whenever I ran into Charlie in the hallways of the courthouse, his face would light up with a smile and his eyes would start to twinkle whenever we talked about the children. He was the obvious proud father whose thoughts were never far from his family.
While Charlie will always be truly missed, one look at his children and it becomes truly evident that the very best of Charlie Kaplan is still with us.Although a father can never be replaced, those who hope and pray for the very best for his family should know that a large, strong, warm and loving family remains here for the children. I trust that merely knowing this will provide comfort for those who truly care about what Charlie cared the most about, his two handsome young sons and his beautiful young daughter.

As retired police officers from Ft. Lauderdale Police we both had cases in front of Judge Kaplan over 30 years. He was always straight to the point and made sure we were prepared. The most fair and kind judge yet found those small moments to lighten the day. Although we're both retired knowing Judge Kaplan is no longer on the bench leaves a sad spot in our hearts. Please promise to cherish and honor your father's memory by continuing in his path. He was an honorable and honest man. He kept his word and ALWAYS did the right thing. While presiding over our son's case, we got a glimpse of the personal side of Judge Kaplan. We found him to be fair, warm, and thoughtful. He held a high regard for education, and always asked the children in his courtroom how they were doing in school. He also made mention of his own children, helping him to relate to the challenges facing our youth today. It is obvious, even to an outsider, that he will be sorely missed. Charlie was a neighbor and a friend of mine. Living in the same building with Charlie for the past 4 or 5 years, we often times met in common areas and had some very nice conversations, about most anything.
He was a wonderful neighbor, not just to me and my wife but to all of us that live in the building.
He never had a bad word to say about anyone and he was always a pleasure to be with.
I'm just sorry that we weren't closer than we were. He loved and cherished his 3 children - they were the most important people in his life.
He loved his Judgeship and he beamed whenever anyone asked him about it.

May the Lord's angels be with the Kaplin family during this difficult time. I first worked with Charlie when he was a prosecutor in the Sex Crimes Unit of the State Attorney's Office. Charlie dedicated himself to the victims of sexual crimes and was an excellent attorney and judge. This news today was shocking, however, I'm comforted to know that Charlie is now at peace with the Lord. Charlie, rest in peace until we meet again.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well-lived. Charlie was a good friend and a special individual. He always found joy in other people and I was especially cheered to receive a text from Charlie when he saw me on TV at the Democratic convention. My last face to face with Charlie was when he appeared at my school, Walter C. Young Middle School, to talk to the kids and made such a hit, he promised to return often.
Charlie, we will miss you.

I received a phone call at home advising me of his passing today. I worked with him before and after he became a Judge. He assisted the Trial Unit and Trial Pool when he was able. He always smiled and frequently stopped by if not just to said "hi". I agree with a previous statement made: "he was a very regular guy". I believe he cared and know he made a difference. He believed in doing service; he showed and earned respect. His passing is our loss. He will be truly missed.
With my deepest sympathy,

News of Charlie Kaplan's passing has left me in complete state of shock. I first met him when we were both campaigning for office and we hit it off instantly. In fact, I saw him last about three weeks ago and we shared a few laughs about current events as usual. He was always a pleasure to speak to, a very regular guy. Today's news just leaves me speechless. My heart goes out to Judge Kaplan's family, especially his kids -- your dad was a very good man and always spoke very lovingly of you.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Angelo Castillo, Commissioner
