Douglas Butturff Obituary

Douglas Rolla Butturff, age 82, died peacefully in his sleep in Boynton Beach at 10:52 p.m. on Friday, January 14 and was officially declared by a medical doctor just after midnight on Saturday, January 15 at his residence. He was born May 31, 1939 in Washinton, DC to the late Douglas Mellin Butturff and Nancy Harrison Sentz Gray. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Harrison Powell Butturff.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Diane; younger son David married to Angie; older son Joseph married to Jeanette; and granddaughter Jenna.

Dr. Butturff received his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, his master's degree at Georgetown University, and his Ph.D. in English at the University of Illinois. During his graduate education. Dr. Butturff served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard for the District of Colombia. During his military service, Dr. Butturff proudly stood guard near Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

In the first half of his career, Dr. Butturff taught at Fordham University, Queens College, University of Akron, and the University of Central Arkansas where he served as the Chairman of the English Department. In the second half of his career, Dr. Butturff became a financial planner with Northwestern Mutual where he became a Lifetime Member of the Million Dollar Roundtable.

Dr. Butturff was buried in the New Cemetery of Safed, Israel on Tuesday, January 18. A memorial will be held on Sunday, February 13 at Chabad of Greater Boynton Beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chabad of Greater Boynton Beach or the American Heart Association.
