Gabriel O'Reilly Obituary

Father Gabriel T. O'Reilly, founding pastor of Saint David Catholic Church in Davie died June 7, 2013, at the age of 69 years. Born March 7, 1944 in Clara, County Offaly, Ireland, Father O'Reilly was the seventh of eight children. His father, Hugh, was a police officer, and the family was considered "farming stock." Father O'Reilly attended Franciscan Primary School in Clara and St. Kieran's College, then completed his theology studies at St. Peter's in Wexford. He was ordained June 4, 1967 for the then Diocese of Miami and began serving as parochial vicar at St. Monica in Opa Locka. Concurrently, he served as chaplain of the Marian Center for the developmentally disabled and director of the Apostolate to the Deaf and Blind (precursor to today's Schott Communities). In June 1970 he was named parochial vicar of Little Flower Parish in Hollywood and chaplain of the Sunland Training Center in Miami, a state-run facility for the disabled. In 1974, he was named administrator of the newly-created parish of St. David, becoming pastor four years later. By 1979, Father O'Reilly had broken ground on a 15-acre site at 3900 S. University Drive in Davie, and shortly thereafter built a church with seating for 600. Four years later, in 1983, the school opened with less than 100 students. In 1987, another 600 seats were added to the church and the school grew from six classrooms to 25, including state-of-the-art computer and science labs. It currently has an enrollment of 600. Father O'Reilly "loved construction" and frequently handled the heavy equipment himself. He served as construction manager for the altar where Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass when he visited Miami in 1987. In 1995, Father O'Reilly spearheaded the founding of a St. David outreach center to serve the needs of the poor in the area. That center is now known as the HOPE Outreach Center, which stands for Helping Other People Every Day. It provides food to people who cannot make ends meet due to job losses, disabilities, health crisis and other emergencies. Survivors include his brothers, Hubert, Terry (Monica) and P.J. (Chris); sister, Lily Doherty; sister-in-law, Margaret O'Reilly; brother-in-law, Daniel Gleeson; nieces, nephews and extended family, all in Ireland and England. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Sara (Whelan) O'Reilly; sister, Carmel Gleeson; brothers, Oliver and Michael and brother-in-law, Manus Doherty. Funeral services for Father O'Reilly will begin Friday, June 14, 2013, at 4 p.m. at St. David, with a vigil lasting all night and vigil prayers at 8 p.m. Archbishop Thomas Wenski will celebrate the funeral Mass Saturday, June 15, 2013, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale. Arrangements entrusted to Fred Hunter's University Drive Home, Davie. Visit www.fredhunters.com to leave condolence messages for the family.

It has been two years since we lost him, and I am still having trouble saying what he meant to me. A friend, confidant, and very special man who was instrumental in making me who I am today, through his work as a Priest and his work as a friend. You are missed dearly.

Gabriel O'Reilly at his best

Father O'Reilly devoted his life to St. David's Catholic Church and the Davie community. His presence, compassion and infectious sense of humor will be missed. Hope Outreach is a lasting testimony to his concern for those less fortunate and his belief that the church's primary mission is to reflect the caring and concern exemplied by Jesus.

Like my own Dad, you were a rock and anchor in my life Father O'Reilly. Now I have lost another father. There are just too many times you touched my heart and sometimes, even at the pulpit, I felt you were talking straight to me. You restored my faith after a long time away from the church and made me a better man. Often, with you in the back of mind with that awesome presence you had, you'd bring out the best in me, more than I was capable of on my own. And you had that simple wisdom & presence to tell me things I knew but didn't want to hear and remind me of my faults in such a gentle but firm way. Many a time, when I was in conflict inside, I knew exactly what to do after hearing just a few words from you. I will NEVER forget you or stop loving you for the giant of a man you were. Thank you for eternity for making mine and so many other lives so much better. That's what you were all about Father. The clearest thinking man in the room. Always. The world has lost a beacon of light in the storm. RIP and God Bless you always.
My favorite advice from you: ‘Never wrestle with a pig. The muck gets all over you and the pig enjoys it'. Second favorite: 'If you're gonna be dumb, you better be tough.'

My life will never be the same. I started attending St. David's during a difficult time in my life 23 years ago and felt like a new person. I continue to go there and every week I would hope to see Father O'Reilly walking down the aisle to the back of the church, meaning he was doing the mass. He kept us laughing during the homily and at the end of each mass. I always looked forward to his promise on Christmas eve that he would have us home in time to open presents, or when he asked us to carry the peace into the parking lot. I've attended several weddings by him and laughed at each one, he confirmed my niece and made us laugh. He was such a huge presence. Heaven definitely has an amazing new angel. My heart is broken to know he will not be there walking down the aisle the rest of my Sundays on earth.
Rest in peace Father O. You were loved and respected beyond words.

June 9, 2013

Father, you brought us back to church! Our 6 year old grandson adored you and cried when he heard the news. He was so excited to get the high fives before, during, and after mass. He kept his christmas card of you at the alter taped on his wall for a year? You have touched our family deeply. Thank you for sharing your faith and love. Mike and Kim Lefebvre.

Our St.Monica's family is now incomplete. For we have lost one most near and dear to our hearts. A lifelong friend who married my husband and I 23 years ago. Gabriel also baptized both of our children. I remember thinking how special it was to have him in our home to bless us and baptize our children into our faith. 46 years of memories with this "larger than life" man. We will miss him dearly, but know his eternal life will be filled with peace. Our love and prayers go out to your family and your parish.

Fr. O'Reilly I was raised as a Lutheran, but I attended St. David for the last 35 years because of you. Your "down to earth" sermons, your warmth, your smile, and your wit were just some of the reasons why my Wife and I chose to worship at St.David. We were always received as family whether it was at mass, a Hurricane game or the Homedepot store. You baptized our daughter and our granddaughters not just as a priest but as a member our family. The Lord blessed us with your presence and the opportunity to have you in our lives. You will be missed by all of us. Rest in Peace Father. The Gates Family

St. David's will never be the same without Father O'Reilly. My family was there for Mother's Day Mass and Father O'Reilly still spoke about MOTHER'S, how special they are and the role they play in their family. The ROLE Father O'Reilly continued to play at St. David's will hold a legacy forever. Will miss him saying mass and seeing his smile at all the carnivals. Our deepest sympathy to Father O'Reilly's family. May he rest in peace, as he will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Will miss you, Father O'Reilly.

God has called you home even though we were not ready to give you up. We will miss you Father, and the Irish stories of you and your family you shared with us. Our Deepest Sympathy to your family. Flesh will heal, and pain will fade as nature and time repair, but when the heart is bruised and torn, the scar still lingers there. Paul and Mary Plunkett
