Harry Hirsch Obituary

Hirsch Hirsch, Harry, 89, of Pompano Beach, FL, formerly of Sydney, NS Canada, passed away on April 2, 2003. Harry was predeceased by his loving wife Ann; eldest son Alfred; and granddaughter Rachel. He is survived by his children, Shula Hirsch (Coral Springs. FL), Rosalyn and Hyman Goldberg (Sydney, NS), and Linda and Lionel Hirsch (Sydney, NS); and by his grandchildren Gordon Hirsch (Raleigh, NC), Lisa Goldberg (Edmonton, AB), Rinah Goldberg (Victoria, BC), Lyle Goldberg (Halifax, NS), Harold Hirsch (Orlando, FL), Bret Hirsch (Toronto, ON) and Shelby Hirsch (Calgary, AB). Harry was born in Russia and immigrated with his parents to Sydney, NS Canada. He excelled in the dairy business and became founder, owner, and operator of Modern City Dairy, one of the first dairies to be introduced to eastern Canada and was very involved in Sydney's local Jewish affairs. Harry served as President of Temple Sons of Israel and was active in the B'nai Brith Sydney Lodge and The Sydney Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. He was also a Director of the Nova Scotia Milk Distributors Association, a member of the National Dairy Council, Sydney's Lion Club and The Sydney Board of Trade. After retiring and selling the dairy in 1970 Harry and his wife Ann retired to South Florida. One of Harry's greatest passions was harness racing. Over the years he owned several horses that raced competetively in Florida, Maryland, New York and Atlantic Canada. Upon retiring, Harry became avidly involved in the local temple (Margate Jewish Center) where he served as the head of the building committee, building the present Temple Beth Am. He also served as president and Executive Director of Temple Beth Am. Chapel services will be held Tuesday April 8 at 9:15 AM at Star of David Memorial Chapel & Gardens, 7701 Bailey Rd., North Lauderdale, 954-722-9000. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to any chapter of the Cancer Society or other charity of choice.
