My condolences to all whose lives were touched by Jack. We hung out with a bunch of like-minded folks at Ohio State, went to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break with a group (where Jack fell in love in that area) and protested injustices. Perhaps some don't know that Jack sought and received CO status (conscientious objector) during the Vietman War. I was honored to write one of his support letters. We last met a few years ago over drinks when I was in Miami for a conference and had talked about meeting again next week. I miss him.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Jack Zink's passing.

The theatre and arts communities has lost one of its fiercest and most dedicated supporters. No critic in SOFLA did more, IMO, to inform the public or raise awareness about the work of the theatre and its importance to the quality of life.

As one who recieved both praise and "body blows" from Jack, I never worried when he was in the audience on an opening night.

No matter if he liked the work or had issues with it, I always felt he was going to be honest in his opinions.

He never resorted to cheap self-promotion or put himself above the the work he was reviewing.

More importantly, he never stooped to cruel or clever word play to convince his readers (or himself) that he knew more than they did.

He did his job with integrity and -- in doing so -- helped me become better at mine.

Thanks, Jack.

And Bravo!

A great loss for the South Florida community. He did not just critique, but enlightened, explained, informed, advocated. My thoughts go out to the Zink family.

I never knew or met Jack Zink yet his comments on the theatre world were a vital and important part of my life. Whether I agreed with Mr. Zink or disagreed I relished each and every article and review he wrote. I am sure he is
being well received in heaven by many theatre legends from yesteryear. God speed Jack Zink your legacy will live on in many generations. I hope the Sun Sentinel donates the necesarry funds to have your name in one place or another at the Broward Center. You will be missed

I will forever remember my uncle Jack for being funny and kind-hearted. One of my greatest memories was when he and Cynthia visited Ohio for Christmas. It was a complete surprise and I remember laughing a lot. I can only imagine how much fun he is having with my grandpa right now and everyone else we have lost.

Jack, we met many years ago through your sister Maryann and a fond memory will always exit on our visit with you when Angela & Anthony were very young. Anthony put us through many challenges in that week visit where all we did was laugh. You opened up your home to us and showed us the sites of Ft. Lauderdale and I will always have that week. My sympathies go out to your wife Cynthia and all of the Zink Family. You will be missed by many, rest in peace my friend.

Jack, you will be missed! With you the oldest in our family of 6, you had already moved to Florida to begin your life and career when I was just a toddler. Neither the distance nor the age gap ever made a difference in our relationship. When we spoke, or saw each other - it was like we had been together all along. Distance never made a difference in the love we shared as a family - all of us. You were a wonderful, loving, special brother. We are lucky to have had you in our lives and in our hearts. You will be a part of us forever. Be at peace. I love you!

Jack was a great reviewer, but beyond that, a great promoter and cheerleader for Theatre in South Florida. He didn't just review shows, he promoted an art form that he obviously loved. God Bless him and the many contributions he made.

The Cultural Arts community (especially regional theater) in south Florida is forever changed with the passing of this man of great leadership. One cannot possibly "review" his immeasurable contributions and his impact on the lives and careers of those of us in this community. Our hearts are with Jack's family.

Jack has played such an important role in South Florida Theatre for so many decades that I can’t imagine Opening Nights without him in the audience. He was tireless in his efforts to establish the Carbonell Awards and to see that they were successful each Season. His reviews were insightful and well-written and his enthusiasm was infectious when he saw something he liked. Even after Jack became ill he attended theatre and continued to write reviews, displaying an incredible inner strength and commitment to his craft. He will be sorely missed.

August 19, 2008

We are saddened to learn of Jack's passing. We wish we could have known him better. Jack was married to my sister, Susan Haskell, until her untimely death. Jack and I also shared another love -- that of journalism. It was a source of pride for me that we were both in the same business of chasing down a good story. We met only a few times over the years, but it was obvious to my wife, Ethel, and me that Jack was a true gentleman. Our hearts go out to Cindy, Derika, Suzi and his grandkids. He will be missed.

Dad, you were a good friend. I wish your grandchildren had more time to know you. You have lived a great and bright life. We have known joy and sorrow. I will always remember those late nights as a child, you up with the coffee pot brewing, writing at that old typewriter, before anyone even new what a laptop was. You always had a profound joy when you reviewed a show. You truly lived what you loved. For that I am thankful! You always were the absent minded professor and I love you very much.

No Review Can Do Him Justice

The eyes in the dark have closed
The mind that grasped our dreams is no more
The ears that heard our prayers have gone
The traveling is done, his great journey remains
He was trusted, admired, respected and loved
He cared for others, their work, their souls
Thousands of miles driven to see small bites of artistic life
Millions of words written to inspire others to view our creations
A cherished friend, a great husband, a remarkable man
Forever remembered for his talent and ideas
That drama, comedy, music and performance
Needs to be remembered, honored and attended.
We will miss you forever, Dear Jack and thank you for all you did
That inspired us to try harder.

Jack Zink was a consumate man of the theatre. He encouraged all of us in the field to our best work and, even when critical, you knew he loved every honest effort on the stage. Jack's contribution to the development of professional theatre in South Florida is immeasurable. His name is synomymous with South Florida arts and, with his passing, our sightlines are greatly diminished.

The demise of Jack Zink is a great loss to the cultural world of Music and Theater in South Florida.

A generous and giving man.

I am a professional musician and he always found time to answer any question I had regarding Musical happenings and reviews.
.
A week ago to the day , August the 11th was the last E.-MaiI I had from him.
I shed tears of sorrow for a man I have known only through his writing.

May God console his family
