Larry Smart Obituary

Larry Regan Smart 1933 - 2013 "A great wit and conversationalist, a keen observer of world events, an astute investor and a loyal friend and loving relative": this is how Larry Regan Smart, a long-time resident of Fort Lauderdale, New York City and Brimley, Michigan, is being remembered by friends and family. Mr. Smart died on December 20, 2013 at the age of 80. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Lawrence and Marguerite (Cowell) Smart. After graduating from Sault High in 1951, he attended Michigan Tech for 2 years and then graduated from the University of Michigan on June 11, 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He attended Officer's Candidate School in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated as an Ensign in 1956. He served in the Navy and Naval reserves and was promoted to Lieutenant in December 1960. Mr. Smart's long professional career was spent as an executive with Bell Telephone (later Nynex and subsequently, Verizon) in New York City. He retired in 1988 in the position of Assistant Treasurer. Mr. Smart became a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and maintained an apartment in Brooklyn Heights, New York and a beloved summer cottage on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He is survived by sisters Dorothy (Ron) Wallis) of Navarre, Florida and Cynthia (Carlos) Caruso of Graham, North Carolina, three nieces, three nephews and many dear friends in Fort Lauderdale, New York and Michigan. Memorial donations may be made to Lake Superior University of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan allocated to the Larry Regan Smart Perpetual Scholarship Fund @ 650 W. Easterday Ave., Sault Ste. Marie Michigan 49783 in care of the Lukenda Alumni House.
