Michael McLeod Obituary

Michael McLeod of Washington, DC passed away September 8, 2021 at George Washington Hospital in Washington, DC. He was a victim of Covid despite having received the vaccine.

Born on January 14, 1945 in Connellsville, PA, he was the son of the late Hazel Dickenson McLeod and the late Patrick Connell.

Michael grew up in North Miami, FL and graduated from Norland High School with the class of 1963. He attended Georgetown University and graduated in 1967. He joined the Peace Corp and served two years in Chaintla, Guatemala where he established the first savings and loan office in the community. While there, he lived with the Tello family and became their lifelong friend.

He returned to earn a master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh following which he joined the Inter-American Development Bank where he spent his entire career, retiring after nearly 40 years of service.

Michael's many friends and acquaintances knew him as a caring, wonderful person full of enthusiasm. He would fill a room with laughter, was a joy to be around and a source of positivity. He will be dearly missed.

Michael was an inveterate traveler, visiting many Latin American and Caribbean countries in his work, and traveling the world on numerous adventure journeys with family and friends.

Michael survived a brother, Stewart, and is survived by his sister, Patricia Rainey, of Hollywood, FL, brother Scott McLeod (wife Joan) of Villa Rica, GA, nephew Douglas, niece Janell and longtime partner Gabriel Phillips. Contributions of remembrance can be made to So Others Might Eat (SOME) in Washington, D.C. or the charity of the donor's choice.

Michael was always a positive influence when I met him during my years in the IDB. We shared common memories from South America and especially he always tried to be funny. That made my day many times and I truly miss him.

Michael was a a colleague always positive and optimistic and he could make my day just seeing him in the cafeteria. I am really saddened that he had to go this way!

I knew Michael at the Inter-American Development Bank. Though we never worked together, he was highly respected for his dedication to his work and his concern for the less privileged in Latin American and the Caribbean. His smile and laughter was notorious at the Bank. May he Rest In Peace. A true gentleman.
