Mike Murad Obituary

Murad , Mike M., Dr. , retired Vice Chairman, Managing Director and Chief Executive of International Bank of Asia, passed away on November 12th in Hong Kong from a long, but courageous battle with cancer. He was a highly professional banker, leader, talented manager, teacher and mentor, a man of the utmost integrity who possessed a great sense of responsibility to the community. In addition to contributing to the Hong Kong Institute of Banking, he initiated an innovative program with DePaul University of Chicago, bringing DePaul professors to Hong Kong to conduct BA and MBA programs for bank staff with 100 staff members earning fully accredited degrees. Mike also supported community projects, and participated in numerous charity swims to raise money for worthy causes. He was currently funding the building of a mosque outside of Damascus, Syria, the city in which he was born. Mike dedicated his life to his family, Hong Kong and the Middle East. He will always be remembered for his humor, generosity and his love for his family. The only reward he wanted was for people to be able to manage their lives, care for their families and make their own contributions to society. All of us were fortunate to share time with Mike, and we shall miss him greatly. Mike is survived by his wife Barbara; son, Mark, and daughter, Mona. There will be a funeral service held at Forest Lawn Center Cemetery at 499 NW 27th Ave, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, with a memorial service to be held in Hong Kong at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Mike Murad may be sent to The Islamic Center, 507 NE 6th St., Pomopano Beach, FL 33060.

A very loving, caring and warm person, in particular to the "smaller" people. He will be remembered!

After my short arrival in Hong Kong I was intoduced to Dr.Murad through my good friend Joseph. I would regularly see him not only as his Osteopath but also be invited on occasions to social gatherings including yacht trips and hiking exersions with members of his staff, a rarity especially in Hong Kong. I was even fortunate enough to accompany him to a trip to the US and be introduced to his good family there with many fond and happy memories which I will always treasure.

I have the utmost respect for Dr.Murad who I will remember as a brilliant man within the banking world and privately a kind and caring human being who showed fairness, generosity, honour and a good sense of humour for people who were lucky enough to have spent time with him.

He was a great guy and will be truely missed.

The first time I was introduced to Dr. Murad was in 1997 in Hong Kong at a small dinner reception. With his iconic cigar in hand, I vividly remember him being a witty, humorous, kind, and "larger than life" personality - it was easy to see why he was such a great and charasmatic leader, and I am sure anybody else who had met him can attest to that. Prior to meeting him, we shared common backgrounds and had mutual friends since we both spent a significant amount of time in the Middle-East - albeit, at different times.

Little did I know that 5 years after my inital encounter with him would I be working with him at his bank, IBA, in Hong Kong beginning in late 2002. Under his guidance and unyeilding support I was afforded the opportunity to learn a great deal about the inner-workings of commercial banking. Being a firm advocate of continuing education, he also encouraged me to enroll in the IBA DePaul MBA program. I'm glad I followed his advice as the program was a great success and learning experience.

I also keenly remember him for his intense work ethic. He always stressed that working less and being more productive was certainly better than working more and being less productive. A seemingly simple statement, but it certainly rang true in the Hong Kong working environment.

I will always admire his participation and support for active sports and maintaing good health. During his workout regimen at the gym on the IBA premises you could see the fierce competitor within him. He carried this approach in every aspect of his life and it was infectious to be around.

Although his passing came too early, it is an understatement to say that he led a rich, full, and rewarding life - there are just far too many accomplishments to list.

His love for family life, passion for work, and the enjoyment he recieved in seeing others excel were trademarks of his character.

Dr. Murad was great leader and friend. He will surely be missed and always remebered. May God bless his soul and may he rest in peace.

Dr.Mike Murad was more than your average C.E.O. To me he was a father figure, a man I look up too with great admiration. He was a man with profound love for his family and his fellow employees. You will never find another C.E.O. like him who cared for the staff like he did. He taught me important guiding principles such ethics, loyalty and that hard work and perseverance will eventually reap its own reward.

Outside of the corporate world, he enjoyed the simple things in life. I have many found memories of our hikes in the countryside, our intense rivalry on the racquetball/tennis court and working out with him at the Bank's own Fitness Centre.

Without his blessing on my relationship, I would not have met my wife Louisa (who worked at the bank also). How many C.E.O.s do you know who would even go out of their way to help a staff on buying an engagement ring? That was him, he was always there for you whenever needed.

I am very honoured to have gotten to know Dr.Murad as a friend and as an employee. His family is like my family. The loss of someone so close is difficult to bear. We share your grief and shall all miss him dearly.

God Bless Him and may he rest in peace.

I worked professionally with Mike during the 1970s until we went in different directions. We kept in touch over the years since until he moved to Hawaii. I will always remember Mike as a true professional in his work and a dear friend. My condolences to his family,

After working with Mike in the mid-70's, I only followed him from afar. We spoke only a couple of times and exchanged emails occasionally. I was remiss in not contacting him within the last couple of years. His kindness and great humor touched a lot of people and will be missed.
