Robert Milton Congdon

1936 - 2021

Robert Milton Congdon, known to most as Bob, or Captain Bob, passed on peacefully in his home overlooking the sea, harbor and boats of Fort Lauderdale, FL on May 15, 2021, attended by his loving wife Dianne.

Born in 1936 in Rockland Maine to Stafford and Virginia Leach Congdon, Bob formed his early love of the sea from his bedroom window overlooking the West Penobscot Bay.

Bob learned the fundamentals of boating from his grandfather and namesake Robert Milton Leach on Webster Lake in Franklin, NH. Later he sailed as crew during his high school years in Hingham, MA.

After graduating university and a stint in the Navy, Bob married Patricia Wilson Congdon and raised two beloved sons, Bill and John, in St. Louis, MO. He spent 31 years at A.W. Chesterton as a salesman, trainer and mentor to many who still today credit him with helping them to jumpstart their careers.

Bob fell in love with Martha's Vineyard and in 1965, built a house in Chilmark overlooking the Vineyard Sound. In 1978, he married his second wife Dianne Jurenka Congdon, and along with stepdaughter Abby Thompson, established a home in St. Louis.

After 43 years of life on Martha's Vineyard, Captain Bob and first mate Dianne spent 10 years living aboard the vessel Escapade, traveling from Key West to Maine. In later years, they established a home in Fort Lauderdale on the New River.

Bob was a humble, generous person, with a passion for the outdoors, marine life, good food and spending time with his family & friends. He leaves behind his adoring wife Dianne, sons Bill and John (Sheila), daughter Abby (Eric & Amelia), brother Malcolm (Mary), and sisters Cyncy (Mike), Diana and Bevy. He was loved by his family, friends & neighbors alike, and will live on in the hearts of many.

There will be a private Celebration of Life later this year in Rockland, ME.
