Rochelle Solomon Obituary

With profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Shelly on October 7. Born in Washington, DC, June 19, 1963, she has lived in Florida most of her life. Shelly's love filled the hearts of those around her as a mother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to so many. Her bright smile, loving heart, quick wit, and boundless energy were an inspiration to all who knew her. The needs of others were her first priority, evidenced by her intense commitment and devotion to community efforts to better the lives of others. Her efforts to implement a districtwide anti-bullying policy, as well as her co-authorship of the Broward County Public Schools Anti-bullying Policy, led to a statewide legislative mandate requiring a regulation in every Florida school district to protect students. Shelly's spirit and determination were evident at an early age as she attained a top ranking as a junior tennis player in the U.S., going on to win a national team championship at UCLA, and an All-American for two years. She became a professional tennis player in 1982, ranking in the top 60 in the world, and served on the Women's Tennis Association Board of Directors. She graduated magna cum laude from UCLA with a B.A. in Political Science and later graduated magna cum laude from Nova University Law School in 1991. She has been a member of the Florida Bar since 1992, worked as Assistant State Attorney in Broward County, was Partner and Of Counsel for a Coral Springs Law firm, and volunteered for Legal Aid Services. Shelly was a Certified Life Coach and a member of the Broward County Women Lawyers' Association. She is predeceased by her beloved parents Roslyn and Leonard Solomon. She is survived by her loving children, Adam, Ashley, Jake and Lexi; her siblings Harold Solomon (Jan), Mark Solomon (Patti), and Barbara Liss; adoring nieces and nephews and two great-nephews; the father of her children, Bill Heller, and all those who love, honor and cherish her. Her love and legacy live on. Memorial services will be held at the Star of David, 7801 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, on Sunday, October 12 at 3:15pm, followed by a private graveside service for the family. Donations may be made in Shelly's loving memory to The Humanity Project, 604 NE 2nd Street, Dania Beach, FL 33004, GanleyFoundation.org, or your charity of choice.

Harold, Barbara & Mark,
I just found out about the passing of Shelly and feel like I lost one of my very first friends in life. Shelley and I became friends/neighbors when we were 5 and always kept in touch when she would spend the summer in MD & winters in FL. My thoughts and prayers are with you and her children. In the time ahead her legacy will live on and knowing of how many lives she has touched will provide comfort in the days ahead.
Deepest Sympathy & Love to all

I'm very sorry and my heart goes out to the entire Solomon family. In my few years years in Fort Lauderdale I had the pleasure of knowing Shelly through tennis clinics and social events around The FLL Tennis Club. I always admired Shelly's zest for fun, her extreme determination in tennis, and her academic prowess. She always helped to make me fit in as a new person to the area. She was part of a really fun high school social group around the Tennis Club that shaped many of our lives. Through my relationship with Shelly and the Solomons I was able to secure one of my first jobs out of college with Mark and their father. Thank you Shelly and the entire Solomon family for making my life better. Shelly I will miss you. Thank you for your friendship.

My parents and I are deeply saddened to hear of Shelly's passing. I recall the countless hours at Holiday Park and The Tennis Club back in the days of Jr. tennis we spent together and how I loved her quick wit. There were plenty of good times and Shelly was always someone I looked up to. My deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Shelly.
I met her at Park Trails Elementary where she worked tirelessly volunteering all through
the years that her children attended. We could always count on Shelly to
get the job done. She spent endless hours on such projects as
coordinating volunteer test proctors, conducting vision and hearing screenings,
organizing, collecting and delivering holiday gifts for families in need,
coordinating a walk-a-thon to benefit the tsunami victims of Indonesia, just to name a few of her initiatives.
She never said "No" whenever I asked for help, and she was so charismatic that people couldn't say "No" to her!
Additionally, she was fun to be around, smart, witty, and always a bright spot in my day.
She was a great mother with endless love and devotion to her children.
Adam, Ashley, Jake and Lexi, you are in my prayers.

I had never met Shelly in person, but I had spoken with her by phone about five years ago regarding a head pro job at a tennis club in South Florida. I knew immediately talking to her that her kindness was a strength and that she had a heart the size of Texas. She had some amazingly inspirational words on Facebook quite often, and she must have been even more of an inspiration as a friend and family member. She actually helped people. She changed how people think and she changed how people act. I know this because I was one of those people. She was a difference maker. We are privileged far too seldomly to have people like Shelly Solomon in our lives in some way or another. I am so thankful that our paths crossed in some way, and I am better for it. She was a rockstar in life in so many ways, and now she is an angel. She always has been. I offer my deepest, most heartfelt condolences to her family and closest friends. For those of us who learned from her, it is now our turn to honor Shelly Solomon by teaching others the same things that she taught us.

My condolences to the Solomon family. I remember Shelly as a young girl and had so much fun with her when Eddie Herr asked me to chaperon a group of tennis players to Santo Domingo. She was a shining light. May she rest in peace. Fondly, Adrienne Cutler

I was lucky to have met Shelly Solomon, first at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale where I told her that she was among the Top-10 Florida junior girls tennis players of all time, then when I interviewed her for Florida Tennis Magazine. She invited me to one of her amazing campaign events for the Broward County School Board and also, for a very nice dinner event held in Miami Beach (her father at the time was unable to attend). Sometimes, we need to have a spiritual bird's eye view to truly see all of the goodness and kindness one leaves behind on this great planet Earth. Love and peace always from the Secada family :-)
